Euphoria Season 3 Episode 6 Recap: Rue’s “Burning Bush” Moment Changes Everything

Person in a blue jacket sits alone on a wooden bench in a dimly lit space, eyes closed, appearing contemplative or emotional.

The episode opens with a flashback to Alamo’s childhood. Young Alamo lived with his mother, who warned him that a man named Preston would soon be coming over to “take care of them.” She also told Alamo that Preston was not a conventionally attractive man and warned him not to say anything about it. When Preston first arrives, Alamo is frightened by the scars on his face, but he quickly realizes Preston is kind-hearted.

Preston takes Alamo out for ice cream, and we learn more about his background. Preston had been working at a chemical plant when an explosion severely scarred his face. He was waiting on a settlement payout from the accident, and once the money finally came in, Alamo’s mother began filling their home with expensive items. Preston showered her with jewelry, wanted Alamo to attend a prestigious school, and even took them on a nice vacation to the beach.

One the vacation, Preston tells Alamo that he plans to ask his mother to marry him and asks for his blessing. Alamo agrees. However, when they return home, they discover their apartment completely emptied out. They have been robbed. Alamo’s mother immediately takes him away despite Preston begging them to stay. They relocate to another town, and Alamo immediately realizes the truth when he sees all of their old furniture inside another man’s apartment. His mother had been running a long con the entire time and never truly loved Preston. Alamo is devastated and begins playing with is cowboy toys for comfort. At that moment he swears another woman will never get over on him.

The episode then cuts back to the present, picking up directly where the previous episode ended. Alamo charges toward Rue Bennett (Zendaya) while she is buried in the dirt. Riding on horseback and swinging his club, it appears as though he is about to strike her, but he narrowly misses.

Alamo forces Rue to call Faye (Chloe Cherry) and ask her to make a copy of the key used to open Laurie’s safe. Rue reminds Faye that Fez would have helped them if he were still around. Faye hesitates because she is now involved with Wayne, who wants to start a family with her and has even given her a swastika tattoo. Faye has also unknowingly been using the drugs Rue swapped out earlier and has been having diarrhea because of it. Eventually, Faye agrees to secretly photograph the key with the promise from Rue that she can keep the money.

Later, Laurie (Martha Kelly) arrives at Alamo’s home for a meeting. She reveals that she wants him to begin transporting drugs from Mexico using ambulances that carry women returning from plastic surgery procedures. Lori explains that the operation would involve moving 80 kilos of fentanyl. Unknown to her, Rue has been secretly recording the conversation while detectives listen in. Laurie also wants Rue and Mitch involved in the operation, but Alamo insists there are people he trusts more. He warns Laurie not to try to manipulate him.

Rue later warns Maddy Perez (Alexa Demie) to be careful around Alamo, but Maddy dismisses her concerns. At Alamo’s strip club, Maddy photographs Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney) and Kitty while asking Alamo if the girls can have time off, which he strongly refuses. Alamo tells Maddy that he designed the Silver Slipper himself and we see the decor is strongly connected to his mother’s style.

Rue then visits Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer) and admits she has been thinking about having children because she needs something bigger than herself to feel accountable to. Rue tells Jules that she still loves her but Jules points out that they barely have a relationship and it’s in her head. She also reminds Rue that being with her nearly destroyed her arrangement with her wealthy older boyfriend. Rue cruelly tells Jules she is just a toy for him and that he will never leave his wife. Jules responds by slapping Rue and ordering her to leave.

Meanwhile, Cassie films a scene for LA Nights but becomes emotionally triggered during the performance. A line from her scene causes her to flash back to her wedding night, and she begins improvising dialogue about getting a bloody nose and feeling like she deserved it for stealing her best friend’s boyfriend. The director later pulls Cassie aside and offers to expand her role on the show if she leaves behind her OnlyFans career. Much to Lexi Howard’s (Maude Apatow) frustration, Cassie agrees.

Cassie struggles emotionally while deleting her OnlyFans account and repeatedly tries calling Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) for advice, but he refuses to answer. Eventually, she goes through with deleting it. Rue goes to one of Alamo’s guys to get Laurie’s key 3-D printed. While waiting, she sits alone inside a church and reflects quietly while talking to her mother Leslie Bennett (Nika King) on the phone.

Elsewhere, Lexie’s boss encourages her to begin writing Cassie’s storyline into the show since she has such an intimate perspective on her sister’s life. Later, Lexie sits poolside with her neighbor, who jokingly suggests she should simply kill Cassie’s character off entirely. Cassie later receives a horrifying package containing Nate’s severed finger alongside a note demanding that she answer the phone. At the same time, Nate is attacked yet again at his construction site by one of Naz’s men.

Rue gives the finished 3D-printed key to Alamo, but he tells her he doesn’t need it. Rue quickly realizes he actually expects her to personally go into Laurie’s home and retrieve everything from the safe herself. As Rue drives down a dark road, a truck suddenly runs her off the highway and into a ditch. She stumbles out of the car and sees a tree engulfed in flames. As religious music swells, Rue falls to her knees in front of the burning tree, seemingly realizing this is her own version of a burning bush moment.

My Thoughts

The background arc for Alamo was beautifully done and felt like a direct homage to classic Blaxploitation films. The behind-the-scenes footage at the end of the episode makes it even more impressive once you see the amount of care that went into recreating that era. The set design, hair, wardrobe, and cinematography were all impeccably done and transported viewers back in time in a way that felt textured and authentic rather than overly stylized.

Rue’s church scene with her mother was one of the emotional highlights of the season. It finally gave us a quiet moment with Rue and reminded us of the damaged, deeply hurt little girl we met at the beginning of the series. Leslie’s absence has been greatly felt this season, so hearing her tell Rue that she loved her at the end of the phone call carried a lot of emotional weight.

It also reframed Rue’s earlier conversation about wanting children. Maybe the “something bigger than herself” she has been searching for is not some future family she hopes to create, but the family she already has. Both Alamo’s backstory and Rue’s church scene grounded the episode emotionally in a way many of the other episodes this season have not and makes me want to keep watching.
