Veteran actor Eric Dane has died at the age of 53, his family confirmed on Thursday, marking the end of a widely publicized battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS. Dane’s death comes nearly one year after he publicly disclosed his diagnosis, which he announced in April 2025 and which had steadily progressed in the months following.

Dane rose to international fame for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately known as “McSteamy,” on the long‑running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. His work on the series made him a household name and earned him a place in pop culture history. He later appeared in the HBO series Euphoria, where he played Cal Jacobs, a complex character in the show’s dramatic universe.

According to a statement released by his family and confirmed by People, Dane passed away in the afternoon on Thursday, February 19. The statement described his final days as being spent surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia. The family asked for privacy as they navigate this difficult time.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters who were the center of his world.”

Dane first went public with his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, revealing that he was grateful for his family’s support and planned to continue working while navigating his illness. ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, eventually leading to loss of muscle control and paralysis.

In the year following his diagnosis, Dane continued to be involved in projects and advocacy. He was scheduled to attend events supporting ALS research, although physical limitations related to his condition prevented him from attending some engagements.

Dane’s career spanned decades and included roles in television series and films beyond Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria such as X-Men the Last Stand and Dangerous Waters. He is survived by his wife and daughters.

Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
