Sienna sits in her therapist’s office, venting about the problems she’s having with employees, her assistant, and someone she met in Hawaii the previous week. She hesitates when discussing that encounter, revealing she had been on her yacht with her boyfriend when a stewardess repeatedly addressed her by her first name while calling him “Mr. Styles.” The slight infuriated her. Her therapist expresses sympathy, noting how hard Sienna works to enjoy her time off, and suggests she may be experiencing “shame of abundance,” offering tools to help her manage it.
Mallory returns home to find her boyfriend Evan has prepared dinner. She retreats to the bedroom, removes her heels, and casually makes a $50,000 stock purchase before rejoining him. As they prepare to eat, Evan surprises her by proposing with a black opal ring, her birthstone. Mallory’s reaction is lukewarm, as she expected a diamond and thought they would wait for more financial stability. Evan argues they are already stable, pointing to her recent $2 million apartment purchase and his own career success. He offers to replace the ring but emphasizes that his love is what matters. Before she can respond, Mallory receives a call from her best client, Jason, and rushes out to calm him down.
When Mallory arrives, Jason initially distracts her with his new motorcycle, claiming the issue is trivial. However, he soon reveals the real problem: the SEC has questioned him about suspicious trades involving his father’s company. Jason accuses Mallory of insider trading, believing she used confidential information from their sessions. Feeling betrayed, he tells her she was never truly part of his world and fires her as his therapist. He warns her to get a lawyer, implying the SEC may soon come after her.
Shaken, Mallory stops at a diner and calls Evan, telling him she will be out late because Jason is unstable and she fears he may harm himself. Later, she goes to Jason’s home and cuts the power, leaving what happens next unclear. Mallory returns home and finds Evan in his office, still waiting for her answer to his proposal. She tells him the night made her realize how much she needs him and accepts. Despite the moment, her unease lingers beneath the surface.
The following day, Jason rides his motorcycle along the waterfront. When he attempts to slow down, he discovers the brakes have failed. Unable to stop, he crashes off the pier into the freezing water.
Elsbeth is in her office watching the news when reports break about multiple arrests tied to a major Staten Island waterfront extortion case. Captain Wagner enters, confirming it was Kaya’s operation. Moments later, Kaya appears, reassuring them she is safe. The reunion between her and Elsbeth is warm, highlighting how much they missed working together. Kaya explains she is taking a break from undercover work, and Captain Wagner wastes no time assigning them to a new high-profile case in the financial district.
At the crime scene, Officer Nikki Reynolds briefs Elsbeth and Kaya on the details. The victim is identified as Jason Rathbone, a member of a wealthy family known for manufacturing airplanes. Evidence suggests his motorcycle malfunctioned before plunging into the water. With the bike still submerged, the investigation begins with limited physical evidence but strong circumstantial leads.
They next speak with Jason’s wife, who is devastated and insists her husband was in excellent health and had much to live for. She notes he had been under stress from taking over the family business but gives little insight into his mental state. However, she directs them to someone who might know more: his therapist, Mallory.
Mallory paints a very different picture, describing Jason as troubled, erratic, and deeply insecure. She explains her role as a wealth therapist, helping high-net-worth individuals cope with the psychological challenges of extreme privilege. During the interview, Evan arrives home and casually mentions that Mallory had been with Jason the previous night, a detail that immediately catches Elsbeth’s attention.
As Elsbeth and Kaya dig deeper, key elements begin to align. A conveniently timed power outage disabled security cameras, granting access to Jason’s garage, which lacked rear surveillance. Combined with Jason’s SEC troubles and his direct threat against Mallory, the pieces form a compelling theory.

This episode carefully lays out its mystery, introducing the victim, motive, and circumstances early while saving crucial details, like the tampering of the motorcycle, for later reveals. The structure keeps the tension steady and engaging throughout.
Kaya’s return is a highlight, as is the dynamic between her and Elsbeth, which immediately falls back into rhythm. There is also an undercurrent of tension between Kaya and Cam, hinting at unresolved issues from their past living arrangement. Elsbeth’s curiosity about their awkwardness adds a subtle layer of character development without distracting from the main case.
Constance Wu delivers a standout performance as Mallory, bringing complexity and intrigue to a character whose intelligence rivals Elsbeth’s. Watching Elsbeth and Kaya reconstruct the crime and piece together the truth feels like a return to form for the series.
Overall, this was a compelling and tightly executed episode that rewards attention to detail. The mystery is engaging, the character dynamics are strong, and the performances elevate the material. It’s an installment that holds up even on repeat viewing.
I give this episode 5 out of 5 stars.
