This week's episode titled, "Murder Horny" continues where we left off last week with the highly anticipated reunion between Dexter and Harrison.
Harrison, still haunted by the murder he committed, clutches the victim's watch and confesses to Dexter that he hears ticking, it is nonstop, reminiscent of The Raven saying "nevermore", it has become a heavy weight he can't shake. Sensing that Harrison differs from him, that he doesn't feel a release but guilt, Dexter takes the watch from him, offering to carry the burden. Maybe Harrison isn't quite like his father and the apple does fall farther from the tree than once thought.
Lonely and likely craving connection, Dexter reaches out to Mia. He invites her to see Swan Lake, but she scoffs, It’s too boring. Instead, they go bowling, grab a bite, and share some laughs. Mia eventually drops a bomb: “Ever considered a ménage à trois? ” Dexter is surprised but Mia tells him that it is the killing kind. More of a collaboration.
Meanwhile, Detective Wallace returns Harrison’s call. She'd rather talk in person. He is hesitant. Eventually, he visits her and spins a weak story, saying he was only trying to get the victim Shanna’s number to check on her. Wallace isn’t buying it. She reminds him that he’s still a suspect.
Elsewhere, journalist Lesley Stahl interviews Leon Prader about his charitable contributions, including his support of law enforcement and the foster care system that he was once a part of. His upcoming gala is drawing near, and while he loves philanthropy, he doesn't like doing it for recognition. He asks that some things be kept anonymous.
Dexter continues making neighborly connections, helping Blessing’s mother after a fall. The woman, 84 and proud, snaps back when Blessing tries to chastise her for doing too much. Later, she tells Dexter she doesn’t want to die in a room, alone. Across town, Charlie visits her own hospitalized mother and smiles for the first time in the series, a small, touching moment.
Despite supposedly learning from his past mistakes, Dexter starts a new slide collection. Old habits die hard, I guess. He tries to reach out to Harrison again, but he isn't ready. He says that he is setting boundaries. Harrison informs him that he has a lot going on, including being the prime suspect in an investigation. Dexter tries to offer help, but Harrison hangs up, leaving Dexter frustrated but never powerless.
Later, Dexter and Mia meet again. At first, Dexter is hesitant to trust her bloodlust, especially since the way the serial killer he is pretending to be seems to go against her code. However, he learns that Mia does it for the thrill; there is no code. Initially, he considers killing her, but he realizes it would raise too many flags, and he’s already taken out one member of their group. Instead, he tails her… just in time to witness her stalk and procure her next victim. I bet you can guess where this is going.
“Lady Vengeance” is caught. Surprise, the watch was in her possession of collectibles from her victims. The media eats it up, and Harrison sees the report and rushes to Dexter. This time, Dexter doesn’t lie. He tells him that he planted the watch. He tells him the truth about how his mother died. That’s all Harrison wanted. For now, father and son seem to reconcile.
But nothing stays quiet in Dexter's world. Prader is trying to get Mia released or silenced. Charlie visits with the promise of legal help. "Sit tight," she says. “We'll take care of it." You have to wonder: does "take care of it" mean counsel… or murder?
Final Thoughts:
A strong episode with emotional weight and forward momentum. However, the same issue remains; things come too easily for Dexter. Harrison may be cleared as a suspect and it feels too easy. An apple with a neat little bow tied around it. The season is at its halfway point, I imagine paths will cross that will turn the investigation back toward Harrison, and on the other side, Prader and Charlie will get wind of Dexter's duplicity. I give this episode a 7 out of 10.
