As anticipation builds for Season 3 of Apple TV's hit sci-fi drama Silo, one relationship continues to stand out amid the political maneuvering, buried secrets, and ever-growing tension inside the underground society. Robert and Camille Sims may be playing a dangerous game, but according to stars Common and Alexandria Riley, the foundation of their partnership is something surprisingly simple: trust.
I had a chance to catch up with the pair and Common and Riley opened up about bringing the Sims family dynamic to life and why their connection has resonated with viewers throughout the series.
For fans of Silo, Robert and Camille often feel like one of the strongest partnerships in the entire show. While nearly everyone in the silo seems to have an agenda, the Sims family has always operated as a united front, even when their ambitions raise a few eyebrows.
According to Common, that chemistry started long before the cameras rolled.
"I think it starts with just the natural connection that Alex and I have," he explained. "We got a lot in common, love a lot of the same things, hold some of the same values."
The actor and musician praised Riley's commitment to the craft, adding that their shared passion for storytelling helped create the believable relationship audiences see onscreen. Common even credited Riley's performance for helping expand Camille's role heading into Season 3.
That mutual respect is evident whenever Robert and Camille share a scene. Whether they're discussing the future of the silo or plotting their next strategic move, there's always an underlying sense that these two genuinely have each other's backs.
And that balance between love and ambition wasn't accidental.
Riley revealed that she and Common regularly discussed how to make sure viewers could see the emotional bond underneath all the political calculations.
"The silo ran on business," Riley said. "Everything felt strategic. But we were constantly having conversations about how do we also show the love here?"
It's a challenge that mirrors real-life relationships more than viewers might initially realize. Between responsibilities, pressure, and long-term goals, couples can sometimes lose sight of their connection. Riley wanted audiences to understand that Robert and Camille's loyalty to one another remained at the center of every decision.
As a result, the actors worked closely with directors to find opportunities for smaller moments, shared smiles, quiet looks, subtle gestures that reminded viewers why these characters have stayed together for so long.
Common pointed out that many of their scenes operate on two levels at once. While the dialogue may focus on the politics of the silo, the real conversation often revolves around trust, doubt, and understanding between husband and wife.
"It's relationship stuff underneath," he said, describing how seemingly routine discussions often reveal deeper emotional concerns.
That layered approach has become one of the reasons the Sims family remains so compelling. They can be calculating, ambitious, and occasionally frustrating, but they're also deeply devoted to one another. Whew. In a series where trust is often in short supply, that's saying something.
As Silo heads into its third season, viewers can expect even more complexity from Robert and Camille. If Common and Riley's comments are any indication, the power couple at the center of the silo's political landscape isn't losing sight of what brought them together in the first place.
That's what makes them so interesting to watch. In a world built on secrets, the Sims family's strongest weapon might still be their relationship.
