Coco Jones Calls Strung “Messy” While Lynn Whitfield Reveals Which of Her Iconic Characters Would Survive Anything (Interview)

Two women in elegant black outfits sit against a blurred warm background, one skeptical and one smirking with clasped hands.

If you're looking for a thriller that keeps audiences guessing while serving up complicated family dynamics and plenty of uncomfortable truths, Strung may have exactly what you're searching for. The new film dives into relationships where trust is fragile, motives are questionable, and nobody seems completely innocent. We love a movie that keeps everyone looking suspicious.

During a recent conversation with stars Lynn Whitfield and Coco Jones, the pair offered a glimpse into the film's complicated relationships, mysterious atmosphere and the emotional connections that help ground the story. While neither actress gave away any major spoilers, their comments painted a picture of a movie filled with difficult choices and characters operating in shades of gray.

For Whitfield, that complexity was one of the biggest reasons she wanted to be part of the project. The acclaimed actress shared that she was drawn to exploring a character whose moral compass isn't always easy to define. Rather than viewing people as simply good or bad, she was interested in examining what happens when those lines become blurred.

"It was interesting for me to explore people with this kind of moral compass, or lack of a moral compass, where the lines between good and bad are blurred," Whitfield said.

The actress also revealed that she's fascinated by the real-life stories often featured on true crime programs, making Strung's thriller elements especially appealing. Of course, filming in South Africa didn't hurt either.

The conversation took a fun turn when I asked Whitfield which of her iconic characters would survive if they were all trapped in a room fighting for their lives. Faced with a lineup that included characters from Eve's Bayou, A Thin Line Between Love and Hate, The Chi, and Tyler Perry's Family Reunion, Whitfield ultimately chose Roz Batiste from Eve's Bayou.

Her reasoning had less to do with strength and more to do with heart.Whitfield explained that Roz was a protector who always put others first, believing her determination to care for those around her would help her find a way out. Honestly, that's a solid answer. Roz has been carrying emotional weight for decades, so surviving one more challenge feels right.

Meanwhile, Coco Jones opened up about the friendship at the center of the film and her chemistry with co-star Chloe Bailey. According to Jones, building that connection was surprisingly easy because the two performers have known of each other for years.

"It was actually kind of effortless," Jones shared.

"We've kind of grown up at the same time watching each other and seeing each other accomplish things and grow as people."

Having entered the entertainment industry at a young age, Jones said there was already a level of familiarity and mutual respect that translated naturally on screen.

As the interview wrapped up, both stars summed up Strung in just a few words. Jones described the film as "exciting," "funny," and "messy," while Whitfield chose "mysterious," "interesting," and "edgy."

Taken together, those descriptions feel like the perfect tease for a thriller designed to keep audiences guessing. Between the complicated family dynamics, layered characters, and strong performances from Whitfield and Jones, Strung appears ready to deliver plenty of twists along the way.

And if Lynn Whitfield is warning us about questionable morals and blurred lines? Whew. We already know we're in for a ride.
