Elderly man with gray hair and beard, in black sweater, arms crossed, serious expression. Dark background, subtle lighting.

Just when you thought Dexter couldn’t get any darker, Brian Cox is stepping in to raise the stakes. The Emmy, Olivier, and Golden Globe-winning actor has officially joined Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection in a series regular role, The TV Cave has learned and the character details are exactly as unsettling as you’d hope.

Cox is set to play the “New York Ripper,” a notorious serial killer who once terrorized New York City. While the character is no longer actively killing, don’t expect a quiet retirement. Instead, he’s found a new way to keep his legacy alive, by taunting the survivors of his past crimes. Because in the Dexter universe, closure is apparently optional.

The series, led by Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, continues under the guidance of showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips, who has long been associated with the franchise’s most beloved (and brutal) chapters. With Cox now entering the mix, Season 2 is shaping up to deliver a fresh psychological threat that feels tailor-made for Dexter’s particular skill set.

Produced by Paramount Television Studios and Counterpart Studios, the series continues to build out its creative bench with a lineup of executive producers that includes Scott Reynolds, Marcos Siega, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns, among others. Translation: plenty of hands on deck to keep the blood spatter looking just right.

For those who need to catch up or relive Dexter’s moral gymnastics, Season 1 of Dexter: Resurrection is currently available to stream on Paramount+ with the Premium plan.

Cox, best known to many for his commanding turn on Succession, brings a résumé stacked with heavyweight performances across film, television, and stage. His addition signals a clear intent: Dexter: Resurrection isn’t easing into its second season, it’s going bigger, bolder, and likely far more disturbing.

No premiere date for Season 2 just yet, but with a villain like the New York Ripper waiting in the wings, it’s safe to say Dexter Morgan’s next chapter won’t be short on tension or bodies.
