Boston Blue Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Danny and Jamie Reagan Reunite in “Blood Diamond”

Jamie is in Boston for the first time! He's in town for a lieutenants conference, and we get to see him finally meet up with Danny, Lena, Jonah, and Sean over breakfast. It's great seeing Jamie interact with everyone, but there's already a little tension between the brothers. Danny seems a bit jealous that Jamie has moved up through the ranks faster than he did, while Jamie clearly has some unresolved feelings about Danny leaving New York. These two have a lot to catch up on, and their brotherly back-and-forth makes for a fun start to the episode.
Meanwhile, Sara and Seth are getting closer to their wedding, but they run into an issue when they meet with the rabbi. He explains that he can't perform the ceremony because Seth isn't fully Jewish. Seth would have to go through a full conversion, or they would need to find another way to get married. It's another obstacle for the two of them, and they have to figure out what matters most to them.
Mae is dealing with a swatting case involving Blake, who has swatted another kid. Unfortunately, the boy's father died of a heart attack during the incident. Blake and his lawyer seem completely dismissive of what happened, insisting that the police overreacted. Mae is trying to get through to the victim and convince him not to sue the department, but it's clear this situation is bigger than just a lawsuit. Blake knew the father had a heart condition, which makes the whole thing even worse.
Danny and Jamie end up working together on a case involving a failed diamond heist. While they're on a trolley tour, Jamie is still clearly bothered by the way Danny left New York without talking to him about moving to Boston. It happened around the time Danny's son was born, and Jamie feels like he should have been part of that conversation. Things get even more dangerous when one suspect runs and another gets injured, leaving diamonds scattered around the scene. Sara briefs them on the case, but Jamie already has a lead back home and is given full jurisdiction over the diamonds.
I really enjoy seeing Danny and Jamie work together. It feels like old times, even with the bickering and Jamie pulling rank during the investigation. Their relationship is at the center of this case, and the writers do a good job connecting what's happening with the diamonds to the issues between the brothers. When they end up at the hospital, they bring up memories of their older brother Joe. Jamie tells Danny that he made him the man he is today, even if they haven't always agreed with each other.
Sean and Jonah have their own storyline after Sean loses his wallet, which was a gift from his late mother. They start
tracking down fraudulent transactions and eventually find out the wallet is connected to a girl Jonah had been bragging about dating. The funny part is that she doesn't even remember Jonah's name and has already thrown the wallet away. They arrest her, and she agrees to take them to where she tossed it.
Lena also has something going on with her grandfather. While visiting him at the home of a former member, he tells her that he found a cracked phone and a woman's scrunchie. There's blood on the phone, and the investigation starts pointing toward the nephew of a former member being a serial killer. It's an interesting story that gave Lena and Reverend Peterson some much needed screentime together.
The episode also brings Danny and Jamie's case to a dangerous conclusion when they confront a man with a rocket launcher. Danny tries talking him down, but the man fires anyway. Jamie pushes the guy down in time and the shot misses. Thankfully, nobody gets hurt, and Danny makes sure to thank his brother.
By the end of the episode, Jamie finally explains why he wanted Danny around in the first place. He wanted his big brother nearby so he could get advice about being a father and have him around to help with his son. After seeing how close Danny has become with Sean, Jamie understands why Danny needed to be in Boston. It's a good moment between the two, and it gives their storyline a satisfying ending.
Sara and Seth also reach a decision about their wedding. Sara tells Seth she isn't going to wait around for him to convert, so they decide to do what works for them instead of following the traditional Jewish wedding plan. They're both happy with that decision, which is what matters. They ask grandpa Peterson to perform their ceremony which he is excited and honored to do.
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. The Danny and Jamie storyline was easily one of my favorite parts, especially seeing them work through their issues and get back to being brothers. I also love the family aspect of this show. Those wholesome family dinner scenes are some of my favorite moments, and it's a big part of what makes Boston Blue work for me.
