Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 12 Recap: St. Patrick's Day + First Look at Henry Reagan's Return

A crowd wearing green and holding Irish flags gathers in a city. A person in a police vest walks through, surrounded by St. Patrick's Day spirit.

If you thought a move to the 617 would give Danny Reagan a break from his haunted past, the latest installment of Boston Blue just served you a room-temperature Guinness of disappointment. Episode 12, "St. Patrick’s Day," was exactly the kind of high-stakes, emotionally manipulative chaos we’ve come to expect from this Blue Bloods spin-off. Between dodging cartel hitmen and dodging feelings, Danny Reagan proved that you can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can’t take the "borderline police brutality" out of the boy.

Green Beer and Cartel Hits

The central plot of Boston Blue Season 1 episode 12 focuses on the intersection of a festive parade and a cold-blooded vendetta. The Mano Sangriento cartel, yes, the same lovely group that punched Linda Reagan’s ticket to the great beyond decided that the Boston St. Patrick’s Day parade was the perfect venue for a public execution. Their target? Javier Torres, the teenage son of a Mexican prosecutor who clearly didn’t get the memo about witness protection.

While the rest of Boston was busy getting "Southie Strong" on cheap whiskey, Danny and Lena Silver were playing a deadly game of Where’s Waldo with Luis "The Butcher" Abarca. The tension peaked when Abarca snatched Javier right from the middle of the bagpipe procession. In a moment of pure Reagan-style justice, Danny cornered the Butcher and delivered a one-tap solution that was as cathartic for him as it was messy for the sidewalk.

The Blue Bloods Connection: A New Reagan Arrives

While the action was explosive, the real "aww" moment (or "ugh" moment, depending on your tolerance for family sentiment) came via a text message. We finally got a glimpse of the newest member of the dynasty: Joey Francis Reagan.

Jamie and Eddie’s firstborn is officially named after the late Joe Reagan and the family’s grumpy North Star, Frank.

The Silver Lining

The episode wasn’t all gunpowder and grief. The Silver family continues to be the best thing about this show. Seeing Jonah Silver track down a Reagan family recipe from Erin (though we didn't see her) just to make Danny feel at home was surprisingly sweet. It’s clear the writers are leaning into this "found family" dynamic to replace the Sunday dinners Danny left behind, and honestly? It’s working. Even Sean Reagan managed to stop brooding long enough to enjoy some corned beef.

The Verdict

"St. Patrick’s Day" was a solid entry that successfully tied Danny’s past trauma to his new life without making it feel like a Blue Bloods rerun. While this wasn't the finale, the show is currently taking a short break for March Madness, it certainly felt like a high-water mark for the freshman season. Is it a bit cheesy? Absolutely. But in a world of prestige TV dramas that take themselves too seriously, Boston Blue remains a reliably fun, procedural that knows exactly what its audience wants: Danny Reagan being a hero and a total pain in the neck simultaneously. I was worried after last week's episode but it seems we may be back on track. No show has a perfect season, so I'll stick this one out.

Did you hear? CBS has released first-look photos from an upcoming episode of Boston Blue that will feature the return of Henry Reagan, with Len Cariou reprising his beloved role from Blue Bloods. The appearance marks the latest connection between the new Boston-set series and its long-running predecessor.

The official logline reads, "A drive-by shooting at the church pulls Lena and Danny into the complicated past of one of Reverend Peters’ associates. Meanwhile, Mae faces painful revelations about her family, the team manages internal friction and grandfather Henry (Len Cariou) comes to visit."
