Last week on Beyond The Gates, a double date went wrong, Shanice felt insecure, and Anita reminded Anastasia exactly where she could go. Let’s discuss.

Monday

The stupid Impaler story continues. This week, Ashley gets on the elevator during the drop and somehow does not notice Jacob in the back, looking like he picked up a disguise kit from the corner store. Head down, hat, headphones, shades, the whole Clark Kent package. My eyeroll was immediate.

Naomi spends time reflecting on her upcoming anniversary and missing Jacob, which at least gives us something rooted in actual emotion.

Meanwhile, Hayley accuses Tomas of sexually harassing Lynette. Now listen, you all know I have no use for Tomas, but this pushed Hayley straight into Leslie territory. Before, I could take her or leave her. Now, I would be perfectly fine if she left. Bill puts Tomas on notice, but he also seems bothered by the whole thing. Hmm.

Tuesday

Tomas is out looking for a new job when Chelsea catches him. She tries to engage, but he gives her absolutely nothing, which is fitting since he never gives much in any scene anyway.

My Dandre babies are back, flirty and in love, and yes, those were the best scenes of the day. No, it is not my bias talking. Well, actually yes, it is, because Deanna is back.

Donnell tricks Deanna into meeting Vanessa for lunch. Vanessa conveniently appears after they have already sat down, because apparently, ambush lunch is the special of the day. Deanna does not hold back, asking Vanessa how long the affair has been going on, and Vanessa flat-out lies.

Just like that, Vanessa has entered Leslie territory, too. I like the actress and the character, but her obsession with Joey is dimming her light. Then to lie to her children and act like the downfall of her marriage was mostly about distance and growing apart, when we all watched what happened? Please. Either the writers are gaslighting the audience, or I have slipped into a parallel universe. My money is on the gaslighting.

Wednesday

Eva, for reasons I still do not understand, goes to the casino to sing Joey’s praises and talk about all the ways he has shown up for Izaiah. Then she talks down on Elon, a man she barely knows. Joey is basically Sonny Corinthos at this point, and honestly, that is a waste of Jon Lindstrom’s talent. The writing is so biased in Joey’s favor that it is becoming ridiculous.

The optics are terrible. Elon is right there being a good father who wants the best for his children, yet somehow the mobster gets all the praise? Miss me with that entirely.

Joey later calls Hayley over to let her know he knows she and Randy are up to something. Hayley plays dumb, which is fitting because she is as dumb as a box of rocks.

Then comes the double date with Nicole and Carlton, which exists mainly so Joey can get another grandstanding moment. He gets to talk down to Carlton and belittle plastic surgery as though it is some lesser profession. Dear writers, your audience is not stupid. We all know Carlton was there in place of Kial so that Joey could have that little scene. Then this gutter-sludge of a man has the nerve to insult Nicole and her family. Again, the optics are awful, but I do not think the show cares. At this point, I am starting not to care either.

Thursday

The double date from hell continues until Nicole and Carlton finally do the sensible thing and walk out. Vanessa is mad because her Don Mega won't cosplay as a respectable husband. Yawn.

Lynette lets Hayley know she'd better be included in whatever con she and Randy are running, or else. Now that I enjoyed. We all knew Lynette’s “I’ve got my homegirl’s back” act was part of a bigger scheme. I love it.

Kat has Tomas’s back, but because he is a gaslighting, cheating loser, he does not appreciate it. I am once again screaming from the rooftops: FREE KAT.

Friday

Friday was easily the best episode of the week.

Anita is out of the hospital, in good spirits, dressed for Easter, and ready to go to The Club for food and family. The family gathers for lunch, the Duprees meet Kial and immediately have questions, and Jennifer Holliday, a friend of Anita’s, performs as part of Vernon’s surprise for his wife.

Let me say it again for the people in the back: Vernon is the best husband in daytime soaps.

Naomi steps away from the family celebration to meet Jacob. They talk about how much they miss each other, and Jacob hates that he cannot be with her for their anniversary. Still, they try to make the most of the time they do have. It was simple, sweet, and one of the few moments this week that actually landed.

Final Thoughts

This week felt like filler. Ted suddenly makes Shanice feel insecure, and I do not know what happened to the sweet build they had going, because whatever it was seems to have evaporated.

The show is still struggling with pacing, continuity, and overall writing balance. It cannot seem to handle more than one story at a time, and too often the characters have nothing to do but stand around and talk. Naomi is a lawyer, yet we never see her lawyer. Martin is in an election year, yet where is the campaigning? These are basic character and story elements that should be shaping the canvas, and instead, they feel like afterthoughts.

More than anything, the show still has a stakes problem. There are no real supercouples, not even any obvious potential ones. Most of the couples were built so flimsily that it is hard to get invested. Dandre had the best build by far. Chadison comes in second, but we barely see them. There is so little to root for because there is so little weight to anything. Soap thrives on emotional mess, high stakes, secrets, betrayals, longing, all of it. Right now, it feels like too many of these people have lived strangely boring lives for a genre that is supposed to feed on drama.

I am hanging in there, but I really hoped Season 2 would come in with stronger momentum. Instead, stories are dragging, the energy is flat, and the show still feels unsure of what should matter most.
