Beyond the Gates Weekly Recap: Hayley's Pregnancy Bombshell Shakes Up Fairmont Crest

Last week on Beyond The Gates, the Articulates met, Hayley shared news of her pregnancy, and Kat spilled beans that weren’t hers to spill.
Monday
Joey tries to get rid of Heather, but she isn’t going anywhere. It’s clear that he has no interest in bonding with his younger sibling. It’s even clearer that he’ll be the one expected to keep her under control. Later, Heather meets Jacob and Bill. As usual, she asks questions that would set off alarm bells for a sharper detective. Jacob, however, remains as clueless as they come. Hayley tells Bill she’s expecting, but he doesn’t believe her. She insists she isn’t lying this time and tells him she has an ultrasound appointment. Bill’s response? Even if she is pregnant, the baby isn’t his.
Naomi tries to dig up dirt on the Impaler and goes to Grayson for information. That doesn’t sit well with Ashley, who shows up out of nowhere to berate Naomi for putting her boyfriend in danger. Ashley seems to have forgotten that Naomi’s husband saved Grayson’s life and kept him out of prison.
Meanwhile, Ted and Shanice prove that viewers need to be careful what they ask for. They spend the week having the same conversation about house shopping, with Shanice acting insecure and overwhelmed by the prospect of having nice things. She appears to come from a middle-class background, which makes this behavior feel especially strange.
Tuesday
Anita auditions for Tracy and Sharon to prove she can still sing. Things are rocky at first, but she finds her voice again.
Vanessa climbs onto her high horse to confront Randy about his lies. The lack of self-awareness is astonishing. This woman is openly dating a criminal and expects everyone to celebrate it. She neglects her children for said criminal, yet has the gall to confront Randy about supporting his family? He should have told her where to shove it, but apparently, the help isn’t supposed to talk back.
Shanice and Ted continue looking at houses, but Ted is still checking Nicole’s temperature. When Nicole says she’s happy about this next step in his life, he seems disappointed by her reaction. That wedding is not happening. Ted and Andre share a meal at The Uptown when Heather approaches and makes things uncomfortable. Ted notices the temperature drop and questions Andre after she leaves, but Andre evades the question.
Meanwhile, Dani confronts Hayley at the country club. Caroline persuades Bill to take a break, and they head there as well. Bill pulls Dani away from her family to discuss Callista, but Dani is tired of the past resurfacing. She tells him she’s looking forward, and he should do the same.
Wednesday
Martin and Vernon discuss his Senate race, which might as well be uncontested at this point. We haven’t met his opponent, there hasn’t been much real campaigning, and the story has no stakes. It still feels as though the show is afraid to take risks with its Black characters unless they fit neatly into the role of villain or criminal. Martin’s campaign could give us conflict, pressure, and difficult choices. Instead, it’s barely giving us a campaign.
Jacob talks to Izaiah about his argument with Naomi. Meanwhile, Naomi discusses it with Kat and Chelsea, who offer some horrible advice. Elsewhere, Sam breaks down with Smitty, afraid of losing him if he’s convicted. Leslie learns about Eva and Izaiah’s anniversary and wants to throw them a bash at the club. Eva points out that it would be tasteless, considering the anniversary they helped ruin. Leslie waves that away as something that’s all in the past.
Thursday
At The Uptown, Leslie has a diaper cake delivered because she has no sense. Kat spots it and immediately assumes Eva is pregnant. She’s having drinks with Tomas, but that gets put on hold so she can text Izaiah and ask whether he’s about to be a “pappy.” He has no idea what she’s talking about. After some back-and-forth, Kat is relieved to learn that Eva isn’t pregnant.
She marches over to Leslie’s table for answers. When Leslie won’t give her any, Kat snatches the card and reads who the gift is for. Kat then arrives late to the Chelsea Kat bag launch and walks right in with news of Hayley’s pregnancy. It’s practically the first thing out of her mouth. She drops that bomb in the middle of the room as though it’s hers to announce. The Dupree women gather to discuss the news, but thankfully, Anita puts a stop to it.
Hayley had planned to sell the baby to Bill, but by the end of the episode, she seems to be considering how to get the most money out of him. Will she pursue child support? Or will she make him fear that his baby will be neglected unless he steps in and gives her the life she’s grown accustomed to?
Friday
The party at Nicole’s continues. Bill demands a paternity test from Hayley. She tries to make an excuse, but she knows the baby is his. The annual Halloween competition begins, and Shanice is insecure about going all out and stepping on Nicole’s turf. I don’t want to hear Shanice talk about Nicole ever again. I used to love this character. She was fierce, independent, and confident. Now she’s a shell of her former self, constantly measuring her place in Ted’s life against Nicole’s. All this for a man. Ew.
Izaiah tells Eva that Kat thought she might be pregnant. Eva makes it clear that they’re nowhere near ready for that. Leslie tells Grayson about Hayley’s pregnancy. Later, Eva and Izaiah join Leslie at The Uptown, where Hayley flirts with Izaiah. Once the couple leaves, Leslie goes off on Hayley and threatens her.
The two then use their crimes as street cred, each trying to prove she isn’t intimidated by the other. Apparently, we’re supposed to be entertained by another exchange between villains who never seem to face consequences. Writers, that gets old fast.
Final Thoughts on the Week
This week was just okay. The pace was slow, the action was scarce, and there wasn’t a cliffhanger to leave us eager for Monday. Martin’s campaign continues to drag, even with the fireside chat. If he’s supposed to be about the people, why hold it at the country club? That feels tone-deaf, especially in this economy.
Anastasia gets to challenge Smitty outside, but she’s easily shut down, as usual. There’s no tension when these confrontations end before they can threaten anyone’s position. That’s the larger problem. Too many stories keep circling the same issues without moving forward. Ted and Shanice talk about houses. Shanice worries about Nicole. The villains trade threats, and consequences remain somewhere offscreen.
The repetition makes me want to step away from the show for a while. But I’ll be here, recapping and hoping the next week gives us something worth talking about.
