Fairmont Crest is still feeling the loss of Derek Baldwin and if fan reactions are any indication, viewers are nowhere near finished mourning one of Beyond the Gates' most beloved characters. Derek's shocking death sent ripples through the fandom, sparking outrage, heartbreak, and plenty of questions about what could have been. Now, actor Ben Gavin is pulling back the curtain on his emotional departure from the CBS daytime drama, revealing that he was just as surprised by Derek's fate as the audience watching at home.

During a recent appearance on The TV Cave's Soap Wire Podcast, Gavin reflected on his time with Beyond the Gates, discussing everything from learning about Derek's death to the unfinished storylines he wished viewers could have seen play out. The candid conversation offered a fascinating look at the creative process behind one of the show's most talked-about twists while highlighting just how attached both fans and cast members had become to the character.

One of the biggest revelations from the interview was that Gavin never saw Derek's exit coming. At the time, the actor was focused on the clinic storyline involving Eva and Leslie and believed those relationships were opening the door to new opportunities for his character. While he was aware of the plasma ring storyline unfolding elsewhere on the canvas, he wasn't directly involved in it and had no reason to suspect Derek would become one of its casualties.

That changed when he was called into a meeting with executive producer Julie Carruthers. Gavin recalled immediately sensing something was wrong when the conversation began. Before long, he found himself asking the question that would change everything:

"Derek dies, doesn't he?"

The answer was yes.

Although the news came as a shock, Gavin eventually understood why the writers chose that path. Looking back, he believes Derek's final act was perfectly aligned with the character viewers had spent months getting to know. Derek was never the schemer, the manipulator, or the troublemaker. He was the firefighter who wanted to save people, the friend who tried to do the right thing, and the guy whose moral compass rarely pointed in the wrong direction. If Derek was going to leave Beyond the Gates, Gavin felt there was only one way for him to go: as a hero.

That perspective helps explain why Derek's death resonated so strongly with viewers. Over the course of the show's first season, fans watched him evolve from a character some initially questioned into someone many actively rooted for. Gavin even joked that audiences seemed to discover just how much they loved Derek after he was gone. Judging by social media reactions, he isn't wrong. The response to his death transformed what could have been a simple soap exit into one of the defining moments of the season.

Of course, the conversation quickly turned to the storylines fans wish had happened before Derek's untimely demise. One topic that continues to generate debate among viewers is Derek's potential romantic future. While his feelings for Ashley remained a central part of his journey, many fans picked up on chemistry between Derek and both Shanice and Eva. Yes, girl, the fandom was already creating ships before the writers had the chance.

Gavin acknowledged that there was plenty of storytelling potential with either character. Interestingly, he described Derek and Shanice's connection as something that eventually felt more like a sibling bond built on trust, honesty, and mutual respect. At the same time, he admitted there was significant opportunity to explore Derek's growing partnership with Eva. Working together at the clinic could have naturally created complications for Eva's relationship with Isaiah while allowing viewers to see an entirely different side of Derek. It's easy to understand why so many fans are left wondering what might have happened if the character had survived a little longer.

Another great moment was when the conversation focused on Gavin's scenes with Trisha Mann-Grant, whose portrayal of Leslie Thomas has become one of the breakout performances on Beyond the Gates. Gavin described their scenes together as some of his favorites, explaining that Mann-Grant constantly kept him on his toes. Their dynamic worked because Derek refused to be intimidated by Leslie, creating a series of entertaining confrontations that became must-watch television for many fans.

The actor also revealed that one of his favorite scenes was Derek's final meaningful conversation with Ashley. What made the moment particularly emotional was that Gavin already knew Derek's fate while filming it. As viewers watched Derek promise he'd always be there if Ashley needed him, Gavin was carrying the knowledge that his character's story was nearing its end. That added layer of emotion helped elevate an already powerful scene and explains why it continues to stand out as one of Derek's most memorable moments.

While fans are still grieving Derek's departure, Gavin offered a bit of hopeful news regarding his future. The actor confirmed he would absolutely be open to joining another daytime soap. Having grown comfortable with the fast-paced nature of daytime television, he expressed genuine appreciation for the genre and the unique challenges that come with producing episodes at such a rapid pace. For soap fans, that's the kind of quote that immediately gets the imagination going.

Perhaps the most touching part of the interview came when Gavin discussed what he'll miss most about Beyond the Gates. Rather than focusing on storylines or screen time, he repeatedly returned to the people he worked alongside every day. From his fellow cast members to the crew members behind the scenes, Gavin made it clear that the relationships he built during his time on the series will remain one of the most meaningful aspects of the experience.

As Beyond the Gates moves forward, Derek's absence leaves a noticeable void in Fairmont Crest. His death may have served the story, but Gavin's reflections reveal just how many directions the character could have gone had his journey continued.

Whether fans were invested in his relationship with Ashley, intrigued by his growing connection to Eva, or simply enjoyed watching him go toe-to-toe with Leslie, one thing is certain: Derek Baldwin made an impact.

And if the reaction from viewers has proven anything, it's that fans weren't ready to say goodbye. Not us still hoping soap opera logic eventually finds a way to bring him back.
