Before Stephen Amell, General Hospital Star Kin Shriner Was Green Arrow

Long before Stephen Amell picked up a bow and arrow on Arrow, another familiar television face was bringing Oliver Queen to life and soap fans definitely know him.

Kin Shriner, best known to daytime viewers for his decades-long run as Scott Baldwin on General Hospital, voiced Green Arrow in the beloved animated series Justice League Unlimited. Yes, Scotty Baldwin was a member of the Justice League.

Shriner debuted as Oliver Queen in the 2004 Justice League Unlimited premiere, “Initiation,” and continued voicing the DC superhero throughout the series. The role put him alongside a pretty impressive voice cast that included Kevin Conroy as Batman, George Newbern as Superman, Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman, Phil LaMarr as Green Lantern and Carl Lumbly as Martian Manhunter.

From Port Charles to the Justice League

Soap fans obviously associate Shriner with Scott Baldwin. He first took over the role on General Hospital in 1977 and has returned to Port Charles numerous times over the decades. His daytime résumé extends well beyond GH, with roles on Port Charles, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless, As the World Turns and more.

But his Green Arrow wasn't just a quick celebrity voice cameo. Oliver became one of the notable members of the expanded Justice League in Justice League Unlimited. Shriner's version of the character was funny, outspoken and determined to keep the League connected to ordinary people instead of only worrying about world-ending threats.

That's established almost immediately in “Initiation.” Green Arrow initially isn't interested in joining the League because he believes his job is protecting the “little guy,” not flying around fighting giant monsters with Superman and company. Eventually, of course, he becomes an important part of the team.

He also gets one of the show's memorable romances when Oliver becomes involved with Black Canary, voiced by Morena Baccarin. Their relationship gets plenty of attention in episodes including “The Cat and the Canary” and “Double Date,”

giving Shriner a chance to bring some of that familiar charm and wisecracking energy to Oliver Queen.

Kin Shriner Took His Green Arrow Duties Seriously

Apparently, Shriner was pretty excited about becoming a superhero, too. A frequently repeated bit of Justice League Unlimited trivia says Shriner was so thrilled about landing the part that he arrived at the recording studio dressed as Green Arrow. Honestly, if you're going from Port Charles to the Justice League, you might as well commit to the assignment.

Shriner also discussed the role during an interview with Soap Opera Weekly. When the interviewer joked that voice acting allowed him to become an action hero without having to work out, Shriner pushed back, joking that he still needed some gym time to back up his “tough, wisecracking Green Arrow” performance.

And decades later, the role clearly hasn't been forgotten. In 2025, Shriner appeared on the Justice League Revisited podcast for an entire conversation about his acting career and becoming the voice of Green Arrow.

Before Stephen Amell's Arrow, There Was Kin Shriner

Stephen Amell would eventually become the actor most closely associated with the live-action Oliver Queen for a generation of television viewers when Arrow premiered in 2012. But eight years before that series arrived, Shriner was already firing trick arrows and trading one-liners as Oliver in Justice League Unlimited.

And if you haven't watched the animated series in years, Shriner's performance is one of those things that's impossible not to notice once you know it's him. Suddenly you're sitting there thinking, “Wait…is that SCOTTY?”

It is. Scott Baldwin really left Port Charles, joined the Justice League, dated Black Canary and helped save the world. Soap operas are wild, but apparently even they weren't big enough for Kin Shriner.
