All American Series Finale Explained: Spencer and Olivia’s Twins, Billy’s Return and the 6-Year Time Jump
WE HAVE OFFICIALLY REACHED THE END OF ALL AMERICAN!
After eight seasons, All American has officially come to an end with the final episode directed by Daniel Ezra, and this finale really felt like the end of an era. We start off with a video featuring our main characters talking about where they think they’ll be in 20 years. It’s a great way to start the final episode because this show has always been about these characters figuring out what they want their futures to look like. We then find out it’s Olivia watching the video on her phone, and she’s rewatching Spencer’s part all over again. JJ has also gone back to dig up the time capsule, which brings everything full circle.
Meanwhile, Olivia is in labor. Layla is with her, Jordan and Coop are there, and her mom is on the way. The twins are trying to make an early arrival, and their heart rates keep dropping. The doctors want to perform an emergency C-section, but Olivia doesn’t want to do any of this without Spencer there.
That’s when the episode jumps back to show us what Spencer has been doing. He’s on set with his mom, Grace, and it was GREAT seeing her back. We finally understand why Spencer hasn’t been answering his phone. He’s been dealing with something completely top secret, and their phones were taken away. Spencer is trying to get traded to the LA Robins because he wants to go home, but there’s a problem. They’re not exactly interested in letting their two-time Super Bowl MVP walk away.
They refuse to trade him and even threaten to tag him so he can’t play for another team. They tell Spencer that they made him the player he is today, but Spencer fires right back that he made them the team they are. The meeting doesn’t go the way he wanted, and they make it clear they’re not trading him.
We then get some really good moments between Spencer and Grace as they reminisce about the old days. Spencer is clearly hurting because he really wants to go home. New York never felt like home to him. Crenshaw does. That’s where he wants to raise his kids, and that’s where he proposed to Olivia. His soul has always felt more settled there.
Grace comes through clutch and convinces the manager and owner, who happen to be father and daughter, to at least hear Spencer out. They’re still not sold, though, and the asking price is pretty crazy, so Spencer’s future is still up in the air. This whole storyline basically gives us the other side of what we’ve been seeing during the last few episodes. Now we understand exactly why Spencer wasn’t answering his phone. He wasn’t just ignoring everybody. He was trying to change his entire future.
Spencer also talks about some of the biggest hardships he’s faced, including his shooting and everything that brought him back to Crenshaw. We get some flashbacks along the way, and yes, we’re reminded of his nickname, “The Resource.” I still call him Captain Crenshaw, though!
Back at the hospital, Mrs. Baker is back! She shows up, but she doesn’t immediately try to override Olivia’s decisions about the twins, which I really respected. She’s there to support her daughter. Olivia and her mom have a really touching conversation about Olivia’s fears surrounding childbirth and becoming a mother. Honestly, I really missed seeing them together. It’s been way too long.
But the doctors eventually tell Olivia that they are officially out of time. The twins are in distress, and Olivia finally realizes that she can’t wait any longer. At the same time, KJ is trying to hold off on his surgery because he wants to meet his baby cousins. Cassius is trying to talk some sense into him, but Amina is the one who really gets through to him. The surgery gets postponed until the next morning.
Cassius smiles and tells KJ that he really likes Amina. Then KJ and Amina kiss, and Cassius basically says, NOPE, I’M OUT! That was actually hilarious. Jordan then shows up and congratulates KJ on getting a full ride to GAU, but he also has some news of his own. He turned down the coaching job, and by doing that, he actually saved Cassius’ job. Seeing Jordan and Cassius finally acting like family and showing real love for each other was something we needed. That relationship has come a long way, and I really liked seeing them finally get to that point.
Now it’s time to wait for the twins. After an extremely dramatic entrance, Spencer finally arrives and tells everyone that the twins are here. Spencer and Olivia are officially parents! That was actually crazy to see after watching these two grow up throughout the series.
The twins are named Mary and Cory Baker James, which is such a beautiful way to honor their families. Spencer and Olivia also thank Khalil for everything, and Khalil tells Spencer that it meant everything to him. Then comes another huge piece of good news: Spencer has officially been traded. He’s coming home.
Spencer and Olivia are finally going to be back in Crenshaw, and I loved that this part of the story actually paid off. Spencer spent so much of his career trying to figure out where he belonged, and in the end, he knows exactly where home is.
I also really liked that the episode doesn’t rely heavily on a big musical score during some of these moments. It lets the scenes breathe and allows the emotions to come from the characters instead of having music tell us how we’re supposed to feel.
Amina also decides that she’s ready to talk to reporters about the ice raid, which shows just how much she has grown. She’s no longer running from what happened, and she’s ready to tell her side of the story. Then we jump forward six years, and this is where we really get to see where everybody ended up. Amina is approached by a reporter, and she’s now a campaign manager. Her father is also a councilman. Coop is being sworn in as a lawyer with Shawn’s mom there, and Mrs. Baker is the one doing the swearing-in. Breonna and their friends are there watching, which makes it feel like everybody really did grow up together.
Jordan is up for NFL High School Head Coach of the Year, while Spencer has another Super Bowl coming up. Jordan doesn’t win the coaching award, but Layla has collected plenty of awards of her own for producing. We also find out that Jordan and Layla have a daughter, which is another reminder of just how much their lives have changed since we first met them.
Khalil runs into Tori outside the hospital, and we find out that she’s now a first-year medical student. She’s also the head coach for the Laker Girls. KJ made it to the Robins and is actually playing in the Super Bowl with Spencer, which is another really cool full-circle moment for him.
Spencer then drops another huge piece of news on KJ. He’s retiring after the Super Bowl. Honestly, retiring as a three-time champion is a pretty damn good way to walk away. After everything Spencer went through to get to the NFL, seeing him reach that point was really satisfying.
Then we get one of my favorite scenes of the entire episode. Jordan and Spencer are sitting together on the field, having a heart-to-heart and reminiscing on everything they’ve been through. They’re thinking about the past, their families, everything they’ve accomplished and the people who aren’t there to see it. It’s one of those scenes where you really feel the weight of eight seasons.
And then we get the final surprise. Billy Baker. Taye Diggs makes a special appearance as the spirit of Billy, watching Spencer and Jordan walk off the field. And all Billy can do is smile. That was a really emotional way to end his connection to these characters, especially because his impact has been felt throughout the entire series.
I would have loved to see Amina and KJ together one more time in the future. I also would have liked to see what Dillon was doing six years later. With such a massive cast and eight seasons of storylines, there’s only so much you can fit into one episode, but I still think the show did a pretty good job giving most of these characters some type of closure.
For the most part, I think everybody got a pretty satisfying ending. And that’s what I wanted from this finale. Not some giant twist, not some crazy cliffhanger, just closure.
We’ve watched Spencer, Olivia, Jordan, Layla, Coop, KJ, Khalil, Amina and so many other characters grow up right in front of us. We’ve watched them win, lose, fall in love, make some absolutely terrible decisions, and eventually become adults.
And now we have to say goodbye. This really is the end of an era.
All American had its ups and downs, but there’s no denying how much these characters meant to people over the last eight seasons. After everything we’ve been through with them, it’s definitely going to be weird knowing there isn’t another episode coming next week. But I’m glad we got to take this journey with them.
All American will never be forgotten.
