Abbott Elementary Season 6 Episode 1 Recap: Welcome to the Jungle

Abbott Elementary kicks off season six with chaos from the very first minute and, naturally, Jacob is right in the middle of it.
The Eagles build a playground for a school every year. So, Jacob submits Abbott for consideration. Unfortunately, they have already chosen a school. Undeterred, he reaches out to the 76ers and applies a little pressure, only to wind up getting scammed. When the actual 76ers show up, Jacob tells them to get lost. This man knows nothing about sports, and it shows. Gregory has to clue him in, but the funniest part is the terrible work the scammers are doing. Jacob, please look at the playground before you run off the real basketball players.
Meanwhile, Janine is ready to go all out with her classroom theme, “Welcome to the Jungle,” and Gregory is preparing for his new role as vice principal. Abbott also has two new teachers joining the staff. A new school year, new faces, and plenty of opportunities for foolishness.
Barb comes in disheveled, and Jacob pulls up an alert about a woman being hit by a car. That woman was Barb. She is protected and blessed; she also does not want to call the police, which immediately makes me think there is more to this story. She blames the lack of a crossing guard. Gregory tries to assure her they will get one, but Ava shuts that down. So much for easing into the job.
Melissa, meanwhile, becomes a union rep and is ready to enforce the rules, much to Ava’s irritation. She also clashes with Elsa, the new second-grade teacher. Melissa already has enough opinions for the whole administration, so adding union authority to the mix should keep things interesting.
Ava and Gregory have their own growing pains. She wants to focus on the bigger picture, while he wants to tackle the problems right in front of them. Ava resents needing a vice principal in the first place, and Gregory’s eagerness to step up leaves her feeling threatened. Of course, she still finds time to let him know she knows he plans to propose to “Strawberry Shortcake.” Ava will always squeeze in a Janine jab.
Speaking of Janine, her jungle theme includes a mister and a fire pit. Ma’am, this is a classroom. Gregory tells her those additions have to go, putting his new authority to work on a very enthusiastic girlfriend. Eventually, compromise wins out: Abbott gets a crossing guard, and Melissa gets her classroom back.
Gregory also learns that interviewing someone does not necessarily mean you have interviewed an actual person. His new hire turns out to be a deepfake and, unsurprisingly, does not show up for the first day. Ava spots the problem immediately. That vice principal title comes with a learning curve.
Still, Gregory scores new air conditioners for the school by taking a pragmatic approach. Between that win and the hiring mishap, the episode makes a good case for why he and Ava complement each other. Gregory is willing to step up and Ava has instincts he still needs to develop. He needs her as much as she needs him. Watching them work together could be one of the season’s strongest threads, assuming Ava each can accept what the other brings to the table.
As for Barb, it turns out she caused the accident because she was looking down at her phone instead of paying attention. Now the reluctance to involve the police makes sense. Protected and blessed, yes, but apparently distracted, too.
Overall, this is a solid premiere with the familiar personalities and workplace chaos we love about Abbott. It is not a laugh-a-minute episode, but it has its funny moments, the writing is smart, and the cast brings its A game. There is plenty to enjoy here, especially as Ava and Gregory figure out how to share the responsibility of keeping this school running.
