Two women in a classroom with a man wearing a green bow tie and suit; one woman adjusts his jacket, while the other gestures, chatting.

Abbott came in light, chaotic, and just a little shady this week, and honestly, that’s when this show thrives.

Barbara vs… Her Own Grandbaby

Barbara brings her grandbaby to Abbott, expecting adoration, but instead, the child is fussy and can be quieted by everyone but her and I mean everyone. Teachers. Staff. Even Ava, either she has more maternal instinct than we thought or children are drawn to the wildcard.

And you know Barbara prides herself on being the nurturer, so this hit her spirit a little. Watching her try to pass the baby around trying to prove that it isn’t her was comedic gold.

Freaky Friday: Teacher Edition

Now THIS was the engine of the episode.

Gregory starts off a little smug, talking about how first graders come to him basically needing to be built from the ground up. Meanwhile, Barbara—kindergarten queen—is not here for the implication that her job is daycare with snacks.

Cue the switch.

Melissa suggests a Freaky Friday situation, and both of them agree to swap classes. And baby…Gregory folded. Quickly.

Kindergarten ate him up. Spit him out, and by the time it was over, he needed a nap time.

To his credit, he admits it. No ego, no deflection—just honesty. And Barbara meets him there with one of the most important lines of the episode: they’re not competitors, they’re collaborators.

Jacob vs The Internet

Now let’s talk about Jacob, because…whew.

Jacob is running his campaign like it’s 2005. Respectful. Issue-based. Integrity-driven. Meanwhile, the internet said, “That’s cute.”

Old likes get pulled up. Interviews get chopped, clipped, and Frankensteined into something unrecognizable. The students interviewing him are bored out of their minds. It’s a mess.

And Jacob is trying so hard to stay above it, but you can see the cracks forming.

Enter Ava.

She tells him straight: you’re not likable, and you need to fight dirty. And while he tries to go there during the debate, he physically cannot stay in that space. He reverts back to being…Jacob.

And ironically? That’s what wins it for him. By one vote.

Messy, stressful, and very on-brand.

Mr. Johnson’s Mallmance Returns

Mr. Johnson heading to a custodial gala to potentially reunite with Ms. Carol??

Why was this the B-plot giving rom-com energy??

Calling Janine and Melissa his “fairy ugly stepsisters” made me laugh out loud. I expected him to say godmothers but Mr. Johnson flipped it.. And the fact that they actually helped set up a dance in the gym? Abbott said we’re giving whimsy today.

Mr. Johnson, being nervous, is always funny because he moves like a man who knows everything about everything…except his own feelings.

Final Thoughts

This was one of those classic Abbott episodes where every storyline hits:

  • Comedy is sharp

  • Characters feel true

  • Growth happens without being preachy

Gregory learning humility, Barbara softening, Jacob staying authentic—it all worked. And that final note? Jacob may have won the battle, but now his opponent is free to run for school board. Oh, they’re setting something up…
