Two women, one in red, the other in blue, smile while looking at phones in a school assembly. Children in uniforms sit around them.

The district launches a new initiative to get students off their phones; whichever school uses them the least wins a pizza party. What starts as a fun challenge quickly shifts when Ava’s motivation turns to a competition with her rival’s school. TAhh, but there is a catch, the teachers have to give up their phones too.

Ava, unsurprisingly, struggles the most. She turns in her phone for the challenge but secretly whips out a burner like she’s in a crime drama. Meanwhile, chaos breaks out among the rest of the staff: Janine realizes her rent is due by 4PM, Jacob can’t keep up with breaking Supreme Court news, Barbara can’t access her lesson plans, and Melissa is losing her mind without access to her online gambling account, or her medical portal. The kids? They’re thriving.

The irony isn’t lost on anyone when Janine and Gregory try to forfeit, only to discover that the students are actually more focused and engaged without their devices. Beefs are squashed, attention spans improve, and homework gets done. The younger teachers assume the older ones wouldn’t understand their tech dependency, while the older teachers talk about having to hide it.

Janine and Gregory devise a plan to break into the safe containing the phones. Jacob, Melissa, and Barb stumble in, and they collectively plot to break into the safe to retrieve their phones. They are busted by Ava, who is wearing an Apple Watch like a ankle monitor. The scene that follows is classic Abbott chaos, the teachers pretending they’re “connecting with books,” then clocking Ava’s ankle monitor. Ava caves and admits that she can’t do it. So, they sent Ava’s assistant, Daiya, to retrieve the keys. A clever student catches her and negotiates a deal: pizza, wings, and movies, a full pizza day.

In the end, no school successfully completes the challenge, but Abbott lasts the longest and still wins the pizza party. The students hold firm on their added demands, and everyone ends the day happy — especially Barbara, who’s about to become a grandmother.

Final Thoughts:

Another sharp and hilarious episode that nails the balance between humor and social commentary. Watching the teachers crumble without their phones while the kids blossom was relatable. We have all become so used to instant gratification that the phones become hard to put down. Our lives can be too dependent on devices. Ten out of ten — a perfect mix of laughs, heart, and a reminder that maybe we all need a digital detox.
