The narrator, Betty Heymouth, begins with a flashback to New York City when she could walk out of her apartment building, stroll down 2nd Avenue, and find herself in front of Elaine’s Restaurant. Those were the days of glamour and secrets. She would sit in a corner of the restaurant with a well-known publicist who would feed her bits of information she could use for her newspaper column. Now glamour has disappeared and been replaced by clarity, with everything out in the open
