Farewell to Doug McBride Yesterday marked a sad day for Beyond The Gates  fans, affectionately known as Gatekeepers. We’ve watched Doug McBride spiral through some of the most devastating storylines: a gambling addiction, his wife’s affairs, and relentless bullying by a mob boss who piled on debt only to get his hands on Doug’s wife. Yesterday, Doug met the tragic end some of us dreaded but saw coming. Lured by his vice, drugged, put behind the wheel of a car, and sent crashing into a tree before the vehicle went up in flames. In the soap world, we call that "room for a return", after all, no body was found. Doug’s life was stolen in one of the cruelest ways possible, all while his wife was in the arms of his nemesis. I wanted more from Doug and I’m left unsettled. Doug’s downfall lacked the nuance it deserved. We were given glimpses of his arrogance and desperation, but little of his life from his point of view. Then they tried to villainize him in a way that didn't make sense. His wife’s reckless entanglement with the mobster was given center stage, while Doug’s perspective was left underdeveloped. It felt like a conscious choice by the writers to emasculate him rather than explore the cracks in his marriage. Maybe one day I’ll write a full piece on it, but today isn’t that day. What could have been. That's what lingers. Doug leaves behind a void at the hospital, a doctor we barely got to see practicing medicine. A man whose potential as a character was never fully realized. Jason Graham, to his credit, brought depth to every layer Doug was allowed to show: bold and arrogant, clueless and hopeless, desperate and unraveling. He portrayed a man fighting to hold onto the fraying strands of his marriage, all while blind to the dangers closing in around him. He thought that he could turn the tables by seeking help from those he trusted. My hope? That Doug isn’t truly gone. That his fiery exit was part of something larger, perhaps an investigation. It's a speculation for now. I had long hoped for a romance between Doug and Shanice; the chemistry was there. Instead, we watched him remain devoted to a woman who did not deserve his loyalty. A woman who carried on an affair with a man dangerous enough to try to kill Doug's best friend. Doug McBride, you deserved better. Jason Graham, thank you for giving him more than the script allowed.

The principal prefers a safe, feel-good production like Seussical the Musical  to avoid any school controversy or bad press. Evan reluctantly agrees, though the situation feels absurdly bureaucratic. However, the students, who initially picked a play about AIDS in the 1980s, quickly voice their boredom and disconnection from the material. Their candidness about not relating to a historical pandemic leads to an insightful and surprisingly mature comparison with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. They flip the script, wanting to create a play called “COVID in America,” which explores modern pandemic experiences. What’s especially compelling here is the clash of perspectives. Evan, representing an older generation, sees the early AIDS crisis as a tragic historical moment requiring respect and solemnity, while the students view COVID with immediacy and relevance. Malcolm and Daniel’s casual, twisted sense of common sense aligns more with the kids’ views, creating a subtle but important commentary on how history and current events are interpreted differently by generations. Evan’s internal battle about artistic freedom versus administrative caution, plus the students’ fight to express themselves authentically, captures the heart of the show’s approach to freedom of speech in education. It’s both hilarious and poignant to watch Evan’s chaotic attempts to rein in the play, only to be reminded by Gwen—his co-teacher and voice of reason—that punishing the kids for their creative expression is counterproductive. Evan, ever the idealist, stays late cleaning his classroom and meticulously sorting his trash for recycling. His disappointment upon learning from the sanitation engineer, Andy, that all trash—including recycling—ends up in the same landfill, is both funny and painfully real. This moment grounds the episode in a relatable frustration with the limits of eco-friendly initiatives. The zip tie mystery adds a subtle tension that complements the larger environmental theme. The students’ general mistrust of Clean.r and corporate tech also stands out. Their skepticism toward Greta Thunberg as an “industry plant” and doubt about trusting a random company underscores the generational divide and the complexity of climate activism today. Evan’s admission that Malcolm works there is awkward but humanizes the conflict. I really appreciate how this episode doesn’t just treat the environment as a dry subject but folds it into the chaotic social world of the school. The voices of the students are front and center, showing that their opinions matter—even when adults find them inconvenient or confusing. It’s refreshing to see the show handle these discussions with respect and humor. This one felt like a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars to me. The first three episodes of English Teacher  Season 2 continue the show’s winning formula of manic, relatable high school madness with a strong social conscience. It’s a rare sitcom that manages to be genuinely funny while tackling difficult topics like pandemics, environmental issues, and identity with nuance and heart. Evan’s character remains a wonderfully flawed yet earnest protagonist—often overwhelmed but always trying to do the right thing, even if he stumbles along the way.
