Where would life be without a murder or two at the swanky upper Westside apartment building know for its murderous secrets?! The true crime fictional podcast that made amateur investigators out of its leads has brought considerable notoriety and Hollywood star power to the Arconia each season. The hottest gig on TV right now is a cameo role, and this week’s episode is no exception. Two new suspects have emerged in the suspicious deaths of Arconia doorman Lester Coluca and dry-cleaning casino boss Nicky Caccimelio — could the wives of the dearly departed be responsible for their untimely deaths on this season of Only Murders in the Building?! It’s the burning question that left fans guessing at the close of episode 5 of Hulu’s hit murder mystery comedy series, starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. When we last saw our fav trio of true crime podcasters-turned-amateur-sleuths, their investigation had taken them to Brooklyn to retrieve Charles missing cellphone, thought to be in the minivan of one Sofia Cuccimelio, played by Tea Leoni. Little did Charles, Mabel, and Oliver know that their quick trip to Flatbush would reveal an unexpected situationship between Sofia and Lester’s widow, Lorraine, played by the incomparable Dianne Wiest. When the dry cleaning widow arrived at the home of the late doorman’s widow, with a suspicious plaid bag in hand, a bevy of alarm bells went off.  So, what’s in the bag ladies?  To add to the action, Meryl Streep returns as Loretta Durkin, fictional actress and Oliver Putnam’s new bride. Though, the couple’s wedding was the featured event in the Season 4 finale, this is the first we have seen of Streep in this latest round of original episodes.  Loretta, who first showed up in season 3, has come back to Oliver in tears. It seems the newlywed actress has lost everything she owned when her apartment of 47 years went up in flames, due to faulty small appliance wiring. Losing her safe house, of sorts, Loretta comes running back to Oliver — her husband for all of two weeks.Though it's never explained why the newlyweds still have two separate homes. Nevertheless, Oliver, himself, has been weighing a major life change with his own home, as we saw in the close of episode 5. The former Broadway producer is contemplating an offer to give up his luxe apartment at the Arconia.  And, because Charles has been preoccupied with his new-found dating app match, Mabel is left to bemoan Oliver’s potential departure from the Arconia and breakup of their true crime trio alone. Heartbreaking, I know. But, can we just talk about Mabel’s matching ensembles, as of late, while she’s been going through it with her emotions?!  The young sleuth’s coordinated plaid sets and pantsuits have been on point this season, elevating the character’s style to a more a chic and mature appearance. Chef’s kiss, Wardrobe Supervisor. But, I digress. Back on the scene, herself, is Detective Donna Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) who has shown up to collect the finger, posing as evidence, from Charles’ freezer. If you recall, the wayward digit has been on ice since it was discovered in a goblet of shrimp in the season opener. However, much to our fav sleuths’ shock and horror, it is quickly discovered that someone has “five-fingered the finger!” The investigation takes Oliver and Loretta back to his childhood neighborhood where we are hit with a series of poignant flashback memories as we get a rare glimpse into Oliver’s backstory, even as secrets about the widows’ connection unfolds. In between Oliver’s walk down memory lane, he and Lorraine discover that Lester’s widow has put the couple’s townhome up for sale. Meanwhile, on the hunt for leads after what appears to be a break-in to his apartment, Charles and Mabel run into Althea — Mabel’s middle school nemesis living her best life at that top of the Arconia, as a pseudo pop singer and social influencer, who oddly enough, may have clues to the break-in. Oliver and Lorraine attend the open house for the Coluca’s home sale for answers. When Loretta finds herself in a restricted room of the former doorman’s house on her first foray into super-snooping, she comes face-to-face with the knife-wielding widow, Lorraine.  Meryl Streep and Dianne Wiest as scene partners on the small screen — What could go right? Everything.  The last time the two iconic actresses appeared on-screen together was in Steven Soderbergh’s 2020 fim, Let Them All Talk, a story of college friends whose trip asea after many years unpacks a story of old grudges and improvised dialogue. And, though their time playing opposite one another again here in our beloved mystery comedy is reduced to mere minutes, the multi-award-winning actresses fill every one of them with a rather nice mix of humor, tension, vulnerability, and nuanced emotions.  Back at the Arconia, Charles and Mabel seek help from the new robot doorman Lester 2.0, compliments of HOA president and modern-day Alice Kravitz, Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton). This time, Althea, who’s rather be known as “The,” and Det Williams tag along to see what’s hiding in the robot’s RAM. When Mabel insults Althea with a passionate word vomit on the stars’ self-centered, narcissistic tendencies, Det Williams orders Mabel to apologize to her former bestie, while she and Charles retreat to the station house to review the building’s security footage for answers. While the episode tries hard not to come across as mid-season filler, the comedy gets real serious real fast with the reminiscing of Oliver’s past as he walks the old haunts of his neighborhood with Lorraine, including the theater he wandered into as an adolescent to uncover his artistic passions. When the newlyweds take to the stage to recite old lines — their time under the house lights is cut short when the widows show up. In the big reveal, Lorraine, who is also a former opera star, let’s it be known that she has been teaching musical theater to the neighborhood youth, while Sofia has been helping her keep the lights on with her cut from the businesses Nicky ran with Lester from the Arconia.  And, just when you think the episode is going to be a sleeper, the plot really thickens when Oliver comes to a decision on his home at the Arconia with Loretta; Det Williams, Charles, and Mabel discover that security footage has been doctored from the night of the Lester’s murder; and an innocuous fruit logo that keeps turning up with the security footage may prove Charles is being catfished into unwittingly revealing details of their podcast investigation to what could turn out to be the No. 1 suspect.  Whew! Meet a woman who convinced she’s pregnant, but spoiler alert, science disagrees. Multiple tests say otherwise, but she’s not hearing it. Why? Because she’s been living in a commune that treats CT scans like nuclear weapons and considers real medicine “government lies.” Sound familiar? Her delusion has convinced her body to mimic the signs and symptoms of pregnancy. Dr. Amy and Gina try to walk the tightrope between respecting her beliefs and preventing her from spiraling into a health crisis. The tension escalates when one of her cult leaders show up but then ends up abandoning her after learning of her condition. But all is not lost, when she learns the truth and Gina tracks down her estranged brother determined to pull her out of the culty clutches of her commune. What results is a surprisingly emotional subplot that ends with real healing. And not the crystal-infused kind. Michael is parading around with a newborn and a fresh marriage while Amy tries to remember how it all fell apart. Jake, on the other hand, is clearly catching feelings for Sonya, but things are complicated. Especially when Maitra drops some blame on Amy for what happened with the hostage situation and flat out tells her she doesn't belong back. Elsewhere, poor TJ tries to regain some independence post-accident, only to end up on the floor and at odds with a nurse. He’s trying, but it’s clear his recovery journey is going to take more than just physical healing. He is going to spiral. Takeaways From the Episode: Memory is not just about remembering  — it’s about uncovering uncomfortable truths. Power corrupts  — and Joan might just be drunk on it already. Paul Thomas Anderson returns with his highly acclaimed One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as an ex-revolutionary trying to save his daughter from an old enemy, played by Sean Penn. While There Will Be Blood remains my favorite PTA film, One Battle After Another takes a close second. For a 2.5-hour runtime, the pacing is excellent, I was never bored for a moment. What stood out most to me was seeing a PTA film set in the modern day. Since so much of his work explores the past, the contemporary setting felt refreshing. The plot itself is fairly simple, but the richness of the writing and character development gives it a distinct, original quality. PTA’s direction is, as expected, outstanding. This might be his most visually stunning film in years, with Michael Bauman’s cinematography delivering breathtaking shots that give the story a truly epic scope. The editing is equally impressive, with seamless transitions and sharp cuts that keep the narrative flowing smoothly. My favorite element, though, is the score from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. His music has always elevated PTA’s films, and this is no exception. The score perfectly sets the tone, carrying tension through the film and heightening its intensity. There are moments when you’re on the edge of your seat, and Greenwood’s work makes those sequences even more gripping. Leonardo DiCaprio is brilliant as Bob Ferguson, the paranoid ex-revolutionary at the film’s center. It’s a layered, deeply human performance that feels unlike most of his past roles, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it earns him another Oscar nomination or even his second win. The supporting cast is equally impressive. Benicio del Toro brings well-timed comic relief as Bob’s reluctant ally. Newcomer Chase Infinity shines in a remarkable debut as Bob’s daughter. Regina Hall is memorable as a past comrade, while Teyana Taylor delivers the film’s strongest female performance, playing the character whose actions set the story in motion. Sean Penn, meanwhile, gives what might be the best performance of his career as antagonist Steven Lockjaw. I usually find him hit or miss as an actor, but here he’s pitch-perfect, magnetic, menacing, and impossible to look away from. He commands every scene he’s in, and when he’s absent, you find yourself wanting more of him. It may be early, but I’m confident this film will be a major Oscar contender. PTA deserves long-overdue recognition for Best Director, and this feels like the project that could finally earn him the win. I also expect nominations for DiCaprio and Penn in Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, and it could be a strong lock for Best Adapted Screenplay (loosely based on Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland). A Best Picture nomination in January seems inevitable. Overall, One Battle After Another is PTA’s best film since There Will Be Blood. Between the sharp writing, masterful direction, stunning visuals, powerful performances, and Jonny Greenwood’s unforgettable score, it stands as one of the year’s true highlights. I’m giving One Battle After Another a rating of a 5 out of 5 stars and a perfect 10 out of 10

Welcome back to the chaos that is Bronx General. Episode 2 titled The Contestant  throws us straight into a mind-bending case, awkward workplace tension, and more than a few character shakeups. From delusions of stardom to job-saving sacrifices, this episode had a lot going on even if it stumbled at the starting line. Here’s your recap of Brilliant Minds  Season 2 Episode 2 and everything you may have blinked and missed. A Reality Check That’s Not So Real The episode opens with Dr. Wolf’s latest patient who believes she is living inside a reality TV show. No, really. Cameras, crew, confessionals, the works. At first, the case feels a little out there, even for a show that leans into the stranger side of psychiatry. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that her delusion is tied to deeper trauma and paranoia and some IVF treatments. Unfortunately, her sister’s arrival does nothing to help, as the patient believes everyone is just playing a role in the “show.” Admittedly, the opening act feels disjointed and oddly paced. The delusion-heavy storyline takes a while to click, and the execution flirts with being too absurd. But to the writers' credit, it eventually settles into something more grounded and emotionally resonant. The second and third acts manage to steer the ship back on course. New Docs on the Block: Meet Thorne and Porter This episode gives us more screen time with the newest additions to the team: Dr. Thorne and Dr. Porter. Thorne is shaping up to be the cool and competent type, but he is clearly not vibing with the chaotic energy of Wolf’s approach. His eye rolls alone deserve an Emmy. Then there's Dr. Porter, who is diving headfirst into “TV villain” territory. From shady power plays to straight-up sabotage, he is gunning for Ericka and now he knows about her pill problem. That ticking time bomb is going to explode, and it won’t be pretty. Office Drama and Unresolved Emotions As if dealing with a reality-warped patient wasn’t enough, the rest of the team is knee-deep in personal messes. Wolf is clearly spiraling from his father leaving again and makes a move on Josh. Josh calls him out immediately, leaving the situation dangling in emotional limbo. It is a raw moment but also one that shows just how emotionally stunted Wolf still is. Then there’s Dr. Frederick, who shows up out of nowhere with the subtlety of a brick and aggressively tries to recruit Wolf’s patient to her facility. There is definitely something shady going on there, and the show is clearly setting her up for a larger plotline. When we get a flashforward to Wolf being checked into her facility, Carol is right there to encourage him to sign, something is not adding up. Carol’s Comeback and Muriel’s Exit One of the few satisfying moments this episode delivers is Carol finally getting her job back. The bad news? Muriel had to step down as Chief to make it happen. It is a bittersweet trade that reeks of behind-the-scenes scheduling needs, especially since we know Donna Murphy was off filming The Gilded Age . Still, Carol’s return to Bronx General is a win for fans, even if it comes at a cost. But once you get past the initial confusion, The Contestant  delivers compelling character development and sets up some juicy drama for the rest of the season. With Porter scheming, Ericka spiraling, and Dr. Frederick lurking in the shadows, the stakes are rising fast. While it was disappointing not to see Van or Nash this week, the rest of the ensemble pulled their weight and then some. The episode isn’t perfect, but it proves that this show still knows how to mix mental health storylines with hospital drama and interpersonal chaos.

Netflix just dropped a casting bombshell that has fans of Ransom Canyon  buzzing. Patricia Clarkson, queen of cool, calm, and cutting sarcasm, is officially joining Season 2 as none other than Claire O’Grady — the elegant, mysterious, and probably slightly meddling mother of Minka Kelly’s character, Quinn. We’re talking wine-throwing, secret-revealing, possibly Southern-accented tension. Yes please. Why This Casting Matters for Season 2 With Ransom Canyon  Season 2 diving deeper into the characters' backstories, adding the character of Claire O’Grady opens up new layers for Quinn’s arc and gives fans another reason to tune in. You wanted more complexity, emotional stakes, and dysfunctional family drama? Netflix heard you. Plus, Clarkson’s addition signals that the show is doubling down on prestige and performance. Think less “guilty pleasure” and more “don’t-talk-to-me-I’m-watching.” What to Expect When Claire Comes to Town Expect sass. Expect secrets. And most importantly, expect some serious character shakeups. Claire is bound to ruffle feathers and maybe spill a few of her own skeletons. Whether she’s there to protect Quinn or control her (or both), one thing’s clear — her presence changes everything. If you blinked, you might have missed it. Mid Century Modern , Hulu’s stylish and sharply written sitcom starring the legendary Nathan Lane, has been cancelled after just one season . That’s right, the Desert Queens have packed up their Palm Springs dreams, and fans are left wondering what went wrong. With big names, biting humor, and a retro flair that screamed fabulous, this show had all the ingredients for success. So why is it already history? But just a few months after its debut, Mutchnick confirmed on Instagram what fans feared, Hulu cancelled Mid Century Modern  with zero plans for a second season. The Linda Lavin Factor One of the show’s most emotional storylines came from real life. Linda Lavin tragically passed away during production, and the creators had to rewrite the season to reflect Sybil’s death. It was poignant, powerful, and gave the series unexpected heart. Sadly, it also left a void that even the fabulous Pamela Adlon (as Bunny’s sister Mindy) couldn’t fully fill, though she was set to play a bigger role in a now nonexistent Season 2. Was Hulu Too Quick to Pull the Plug? Look, not every show needs six seasons and a spinoff, but cancelling Mid Century Modern  after one season? It feels a little premature, especially for a series that had style, substance, and serious star power. Maybe it didn’t trend on TikTok or crack the Top 10, but it had a loyal fanbase and a point of view and in today’s streaming world, that’s rare. With an explosion, a missing girl, and a whole lot of secrets bubbling beneath the surface, this is not your average British tea-time mystery. Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson Lead a Star-Studded Cast Yes, you read that right. Emma Thompson plays a private investigator named Zoë Boehm (and also executive produces), while Ruth Wilson takes on the role of Sarah Trafford, a neighbor-turned-obsessed amateur sleuth. The two team up when a house goes boom and a girl vanishes into thin air in a sleepy Oxford suburb. What follows is a conspiracy so tangled that even your group chats might look simple by comparison. Joining them is a stacked cast featuring Adeel Akhtar, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Tom Goodman-Hill, Darren Boyd, and basically every British actor you’ve seen in a gritty drama in the past five years. In other words, expect quality. From the Team Behind Slow Horses If you’re still not sold, here’s another tasty tidbit. The series is written by Morwenna Banks of Slow Horses  fame and based on the book by Mick Herron, who also created the Slough House  universe. Natalie Bailey, who directed Bay of Fires , helms the project. This series doesn’t just want to be your next binge—it wants to be your next obsession.
