Y&R Put Kyle and Victoria Together — And Claire May Be the Real Story

The Young and the Restless finally went there. After weeks of flirtation, unexpected bonding and enough lingering looks to make it pretty obvious something was brewing, Kyle Abbott and Victoria Newman crossed the line and slept together. And because apparently simply hooking these two up wasn't complicated enough, it happened in Jack Abbott's office. Sir.

Kyle and Victoria quickly tried to convince themselves that their night together was exactly that: one night. Too much whiskey, a little too much celebrating and an attraction that finally got the better of them. Nothing to see here, Genoa City. Everybody move along. Except The Young and the Restless clearly isn't moving along.

Michael Mealor, who plays Kyle, has already teased that things are going to get "messy," while Amelia Heinle revealed that the show deliberately decided to explore the chemistry between the two actors. So that whole "one and done" conversation? Yeah, we're not buying it. And honestly, we're not sure Claire will either when she eventually finds out.

Forget the Age Gap — Let's Talk About Claire

A lot of the conversation surrounding Kyle and Victoria has understandably focused on their age difference. But that's probably the least interesting complication here because Victoria is Claire's mother, Kyle is Claire's ex-fiancé, and we could really end the section right there.

Claire and Kyle's relationship may be over, but learning that your mother has started sleeping with the man you once planned to marry is the kind of revelation that could turn an already complicated family situation into something much bigger. It also raises an interesting question about Victoria: Is this really just about attraction, or has she underestimated how much her relationship with Kyle could affect Claire?

Victoria certainly isn't required to spend the rest of her life avoiding every man connected to her adult daughter. But Kyle isn't some random ex Claire dated twice and forgot about. Their relationship was serious, emotional and headed toward marriage. That's a very different conversation.

Then There's the Newman-Abbott Problem

Because this is Y&R, Claire isn't the only person who could have something to say. Kyle is Jack's son, Victoria is Victor's daughter, and those two family names have spent decades finding new reasons to fight, forgive each other and then fight again. Now their children are sleeping together. What could possibly go wrong?

There's also Billy Abbott, Victoria's ex-husband and Kyle's uncle, making this entire family tree something we're going to need a whiteboard to properly explain if the relationship becomes serious. And that's before Victor Newman finds out.

Kyle becoming involved with Victoria after his relationship with Claire would almost certainly give Victor another reason to question his motives. Considering Victor's history with the Abbotts — and Kyle specifically — we can't imagine The

Mustache simply shrugging this one off.

The Weird Part? Kyle and Victoria Actually Have Chemistry

Here's where Y&R may have gotten us. On paper, Kyle and Victoria sound like one of those soap pairings designed primarily to make viewers yell, "Wait...WHAT?" Then you watch them together, and there's an ease between Michael Mealor and Amelia Heinle that makes the pairing more believable than it probably has any right to be.

Heinle has even revealed that she noticed Kyle and Victoria kept being put into scenes together before she knew where the story was headed and wondered whether the show was testing their chemistry. Turns out, it was. Executive producer Sally McDonald eventually told Heinle that Victoria was getting a romance with Kyle specifically because the show saw chemistry between the actors.

Whether viewers love this pairing, hate it or are still staring at their television trying to process it, Y&R has accomplished something important: people are talking about Kyle and Victoria.

So Where Does This Go?

For now, Kyle and Victoria can call what happened a mistake all they want, but this is a soap opera. Two characters don't spend weeks growing closer, finally sleep together and then immediately insist it'll never happen again unless there's a pretty good chance it's happening again. The more interesting question is what happens when their secret stops being a secret.

Claire finding out has the potential to completely change her relationship with Victoria. Victor discovering what's happening could reopen another front in the Newman-Abbott war, while Jack learning what happened in his own office might require an entirely separate conversation. Meanwhile, Kyle and Victoria still have to figure out whether this really is just physical attraction or whether something neither of them expected is developing.

We weren't exactly asking The Young and the Restless to put Kyle Abbott and Victoria Newman together, but now that they have? OK, Y&R. You have our attention.
