Too Much to Handle
Too much to handle. Will is on his knees next to Amanda’s body outside a hotel, gently holding and rocking her while refusing to let anyone near her. Angie approaches and quietly places her hand on his shoulder, telling him they have to let the technicians do their job. He finally agrees and gently lays Amanda down, standing nearby, completely lost, as the CSI team works the scene.
Faith, Ormewood, Franklin, and Will can hardly believe Amanda is gone. She lies lifeless on the sidewalk outside a fancy hotel, her injuries clearly visible. When the technicians finish, Will tells them he will take care of the part that makes everything real. He slowly zips the body bag over her face, and together, Will, Angie, Faith, Ormewood, and Franklin carefully lift her onto the gurney.
They escort Amanda to the ambulance, with Captain Heller following behind. As Will helps the paramedics load her in, the recitation of the 23rd Psalm brings tears to everyone present. Angie, Faith, Ormewood, Franklin, and Captain Heller stand beside Will as the ambulance drives away. The Will Trent graphic that follows is somber and perfectly placed.
This is difficult to watch, let alone write about. Amanda Wagner was a pivotal character who had already endured so much, including a near-death experience earlier in the series. Viewers believed she was on the road to recovery, which makes her
sudden death even more shocking and heartbreaking.
The next day at GBI headquarters, Faith and Will arrive together, weighed down by grief. They say nothing, but their silence speaks volumes. The entire office stands in quiet observance of their loss. Faith is surprised to see her mother, Evelyn, in the squad room and immediately runs into her arms.
Will approaches Caroline, who is barely holding it together, and asks for help accessing Amanda’s calendar, computer, and files from the days leading up to her death. Caroline agrees, though she quickly breaks down. As Will offers his handkerchief, she notices Deputy Director Appleyard approaching.
Will immediately confronts him, loudly warning him not to step into Amanda’s office. He accuses Appleyard of having no shame, insisting Amanda knew he wanted her job and couldn’t wait for this moment. Appleyard appears shaken but explains he came to offer condolences, stating that despite their differences, he always respected Amanda. He adds that Evelyn Mitchell has information that may help the investigation.
Faith and Evelyn approach as Evelyn calls Will by his full name, “Wilbur Trent,” pulling him back just enough to listen.
Amanda’s Murder Investigation Begins
In Will’s office, Evelyn reveals that Amanda had been secretly working with an FBI contact and was investigating Adelaide Trevens. Faith is stunned that Amanda kept this from them, but Evelyn explains Amanda intended to share once she had solid information. It becomes clear Amanda likely uncovered something that got her killed.
Caroline arrives with Amanda’s emails and personal files from the past two weeks, already digitized for Will’s AI assistant. She also asks what to do with Amanda’s car, still sitting in her assigned parking spot. Will suggests Amanda may have been operating undercover and asks Caroline to check whether she signed out an unmarked vehicle.
Faith then calls from the crime scene with new information: a witness saw a man in his 40s or 50s dump something near the hotel curb from a silver sedan. They are running a partial plate. Will immediately asks about the bartender from the night before, Josh Hassen, and instructs APD to issue a BOLO while stationing officers at his home.
Will and Faith track Amanda’s unmarked vehicle to Garth’s Carpet Cleaners. Inside the car, they note details that reflect Amanda’s habits, reinforcing that she had been surveilling someone. Ormewood and Franklin arrive as backup, acknowledging the danger posed by Adelaide’s network.
Will, still inside the car, spots something unusual in the mirror: an open warehouse door. They investigate and find Amanda’s glasses on the ground beside blood. As Will picks them up, his mind reconstructs the scene in vivid detail. He quietly confirms this is where the attack happened. Inside the warehouse, they discover signs of recent activity, food, trash, and a makeshift sleeping area with handcuffs attached to a pipe. Evidence suggests Antonio had been held there. A nearby cooler with fresh groceries indicates they narrowly missed the suspects.
A gunshot outside sends them running. Will catches a fleeing man and, overcome with rage, violently interrogates him about Antonio’s whereabouts. The man claims Antonio will be dead soon, pushing Will further out of control until Faith and the others restrain him. The morgue scene is both difficult and powerful. Pete, clearly shaken, explains to Evelyn that Amanda was attacked by two people and suffered five stab wounds to the chest, collapsing both lungs. She died quickly, but not before collecting crucial DNA evidence, including part of a fingertip from her attacker. Pete was able to identify it.
After Pete leaves, Evelyn shares a quiet, emotional moment with Amanda, promising it is time for them to take care of her. She tearfully calls it their “last dance” before walking out.
New Clues Bring Them Closer
Faith confronts Will about his actions, pointing out that their only suspect, the bartender is now hospitalized and unable to speak because of him. Will barely registers her anger, still consumed by grief. Ormewood steps in, redirecting them toward their next move.
Franklin arrives with a lead: the groceries found at the warehouse were purchased using an employee discount, suggesting one of Adelaide’s acolytes works at the store. Will refocuses, and the team splits up to follow leads. Faith and Franklin locate another suspect’s home, where they find the silver sedan described by the witness. Blood beneath the trunk leads them to a grim discovery—a murdered schoolteacher inside.
Meanwhile, Will and Ormewood head to the grocery store. Ormewood tries to ground Will, reminding him that Amanda meant something to all of them and urging him to focus on what he does best. Will listens. When gunfire erupts inside the store, chaos ensues. A shooter chases an employee, and Will tackles the fleeing man while Ormewood takes down the shooter. The situation raises new questions: why is someone trying to kill this employee, and what does he know?
Back at GBI, Will interrogates the employee, drawing a parallel between Amanda and Adelaide as mentors. He manipulates the man into revealing information, arguing that Adelaide is eliminating acolytes she no longer needs. The intel leads to a wider crackdown on her network.
A standout moment follows when Franklin prevents another suspect from harming himself, noticing a critical detail others missed. Combined with further interrogation, the team uncovers another key piece of the puzzle.
A Strong Conclusion and Tribute
Faith calls her son Jeremy, asking him to come home after telling him about Amanda’s death. Angie updates Will on the growing case against Adelaide, as financial tracking begins to reveal her movements. Franklin brings in additional intel, and the team pieces together why Adelaide has remained in the area and who is enabling her.
The episode raises major questions: what did Amanda uncover on her calendar, what crucial information does Franklin provide, and which imprisoned character returns? What does Adelaide offer Will, and can he save Antonio and Faith?
This is an exceptional episode filled with emotional weight, humor, and gripping tension. The characters rally around one another, offering support while relentlessly pursuing answers. Just when it seems Will might find closure, something pulls him back, often driven by his complicated connection to Adelaide.
Everything in this episode works in sync, the writing, acting, direction, and production come together seamlessly. It is easily
the strongest episode of the season, balancing heartbreak with moments of levity. The tribute to Amanda Wagner is especially powerful. Through Captain Heller, Evelyn Mitchell, and Faith, we see the profound impact she had on everyone around her. Faith’s reflection on Amanda’s simple philosophy—“Bad people don’t get to win”—perfectly captures her legacy.
Although Will does not attend the formal tribute with the others, including Betty and Nico, his grief is deeply felt. The return of familiar faces like Evelyn, Jeremy, and JT adds another emotional layer, making the farewell even more meaningful.
This episode earns a full 5 out of 5 stars. Sonja Sohn’s portrayal of Amanda Wagner leaves a lasting impression, and her presence will be greatly missed.
