What to Watch Friday, September 18: ‘MobLand,’ ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ & ‘Best of the Best’

Two serious men face off in a dim green-lit room, one in a suit and one in a leather jacket.

Friday brings a nice mix of returning favorites and new arrivals. MobLand is back for Season 2 on Paramount+, Outlander: Blood of My Blood begins its second season on Starz, and Netflix premieres Best of the Best, the new coming-of-age dance comedy starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia.

HBO also has JAY-Z IN 8, an eight-part conversation between JAY-Z and Rick Rubin, while HGTV sends Retta looking for terrifying real estate again with a new season of Scariest House in America. Sports fans aren't left out either: Friday has two ranked college-football matchups and an Apple TV Friday Night Baseball doubleheader.

TV Cave Top Pick: MobLand Returns for Season 2

MobLand Season 2 premieres today on Paramount+, bringing Tom Hardy back as Harry Da Souza alongside Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren as Conrad and Maeve Harrigan. After everything that happened in Season 1, the Harrigans enter the new season struggling to maintain a united front while new rivals threaten what's left of their criminal empire.

Unlike some of today's binge drops, Paramount+ isn't giving us the whole thing at once. Season 2 runs 10 episodes, with new installments arriving Fridays through November 20. Considering this family can barely make it through one conversation without somebody plotting against somebody else, giving them another 10 episodes feels both generous and slightly dangerous.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Is Back

Outlander: Blood of My Blood begins Season 2 today on Starz, returning to the parallel love stories surrounding Jamie and Claire's parents. Starz confirms the new season begins September 18, with the young couples once again facing circumstances threatening to pull them apart.

The first season had the difficult job of expanding a universe whose audience already knows where these family histories eventually lead. Now that the introductions are out of the way, Season 2 gets to push those relationships further without spending quite as much time explaining how everybody connects to the Outlander family tree.

Best of the Best Hits Netflix

Netflix's Best of the Best arrives today, starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia as childhood best friends Maya and Anjali. The pair join UCLA's competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team and quickly discover that getting to a

national championship involves considerably more than knowing the choreography.

It's a coming-of-age story built around friendship, ambition and competitive dance, giving Friday something considerably lighter than the Harrigans threatening each other over on Paramount+. If your weekend plans don't require organized crime or generational romantic anguish, Netflix has you covered.

JAY-Z Sits Down With Rick Rubin

HBO premieres JAY-Z IN 8 tonight, an eight-part documentary series built around an extended conversation between JAY-Z and producer Rick Rubin. The first two episodes debut tonight, with two more arriving each Friday through October 9.

The conversations were recorded over two days in Paris and dig into JAY-Z's writing and creative process rather than following the traditional music-documentary format. Considering the catalog and career being discussed, eight episodes suddenly doesn't sound particularly excessive.

Friday gives us MobLand, Outlander, Best of the Best, JAY-Z, creepy houses, ranked college football and two late-season baseball rivalries. That's a pretty respectable way to start the weekend — and thankfully, nobody needs a 2,000-word guide to figure out what to watch.
