Jazz Duo Opens the ShowThe show opens at Sydney’s Jazz Lounge. The famed Hamish Watson, introduces his protege Annabelle Lee. She stumbles a little as he walks by to give her center stage. She is sensational. Later that night after the set, they discuss the next shows and a talent scout coming to their next show. Annabelle looks odd and suddenly collapses.
Family Ties
Shinwell shuns Watson’s bag of sixth fingers with a snide remark. John just placed it on his desk. Watson, Shinwell and The Fellows engage in some easy, snappy medical banter. Funny how their banter is a bit macabre since it’s in reference to a patient’s sixth fingers that John just removed. But, at least it eases their usually stressed out atmosphere. Sasha shares her plans for the evening with her Uncle Jun, and of course Ingrid has something to say about it. The Croft Twins just sit back and observe. Watson gets a text from Mary, and lets them know he’s got to go meet his father at the ER, much to everyone’s surprise. They had no clue he even had a father. How’d that slip by the skilled doc-detectives?
John’s father comes to see Mary at UHOP’s ER with his protege, Annabelle Lee. She has an unusual illness. Mary immediately contacts John. Mary gives him some sage advice before they go to see John’s father and his protege. Side Note: John Watson also mentions his mother, too in his discussion with Mary.
Father-Son Strained Meeting
Mary hugs Hamish like old times, and John gives his Dad an awkward handshake and hug. John talks to Annabelle and tells her he could examine her. Mary takes Hamish out to show him around. Annabelle gives him a backstory of what happened to her. John’s unique ability to identify and deduce people’s medical issues by observing them is at work. He points out a fact of her intermittent numbness in her right foot by the wear and tear patterns on the bottom of her shoes. It’s why she stumbled earlier. He asks why she’s hiding those symptoms. Annabelle begs him not to admit her to the hospital. John and Hamish have an altercation over Watson’s new mystery, Annabelle Lee.
Music Literally Killing her Softly Mystery
A 22-year-old saxophone prodigy under severe stress. John presents her symptoms to the Fab Fellows, after they quiz him about his legendary father. John sees how starstruck they are with his Dad’s accomplishments, but sidesteps their questions. They focus on finding answers for Annabelle as he assigns everyone tasks. John takes Shinwell with him to visit his father’s club.
Hamish brags about Annabelle to Mary. She’s something special, unlike anyone he has ever seen before. A talent agent was due to see her play in a few days. Meanwhile, Annabelle stresses over what’s happening to her as Ingrid and Stephens perform her MRI. She tells them how she met Hamish, and how he changed her life. She was six years old listening to Hamish giving lessons, and things progressed from there. The MRI is negative, and proves nothing.
Watson and Shinwell get to his father’s club and they meet Eddie Hines, the club manager. They explore the place for any clues to Annabelle’s symptoms. John Watson’s history is all over the walls of family pictures.
Sasha and Adam search Annabelle’s apartment. Something odd is found in an outlet. Adam’s reaction is sudden and he immediately steps away. It may be a clue that explains how Annabelle’s been handling the pressure of performing at the level she’s achieved.
What was found at Annabelle’s apartment?
How does Annabelle cope with her high level of performance?
What is killing Annabelle?
What is ‘puff of smoke’?
What is musicality?
Sasha’s Uncle Jun gives her a gift. What is it?
After reviewing the club’s camera footage, Watson and the Fellows brainstorm in the conference room. He discloses what he discovered. Moyamoya disease causes narrowing of blood vessels in the brain and may be causing Annabelle issues. Brain surgery is prescribed. What effects would it have on Annabelle’s talents? Annabelle's choices are not acceptable to her. Does she change her mind?
An Unexpected Conclusion for Annabelle and SashaMusic triggering a stroke is something surprising, but happens in this Watson episode. How it happens is completely unbelievable. They show how it can occur and what’s required to solve this unique mystery. John and the Fellows synchronized investigative and medical behavior is impressive. Their expert abilities save a life and her future.
Sasha's quick deductive ability to see through Uncle Jun’s lies was fantastic. That did open her up for another form of blackmail, and this story is going to be interesting to explore, especially since Ingrid was right.
This episode also shows how Mary’s becoming a solid central character and still has a strong tie to John and his family, and John to her. Guess Sherlock’s comment about John and Mary being together has some meaning to it, despite John and Leila’s current relationship. Loved seeing John’s father Hamish, his music background and how it’s the reason that led him to find his true calling. Did see that the science and medical investigative techniques were toned down a little in this episode. John Watson, Shinwell and The Fellows are still becoming an Expert Force. Clarke Peters and Piper Curda were excellent. I loved the musical and medical combined thread and gave this episode 4.8 Stars out of 5.
