The Watcher Season 2 Finally Moves Forward at Netflix After Nearly Four Years

Two people sit at a cluttered worktable in a dim workshop, looking upward; shelves, lamps, and mugs fill the warm, moody room.

Remember The Watcher? Apparently, Netflix does too.

Nearly four years after Netflix renewed Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s mystery thriller for a second season, The Watcher is finally moving forward. Production is now underway on Season 2, and several members of the Brannock family, along with at least one very suspicious neighbor, are coming back for another round of suburban nightmare fuel.

Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale will return as Nora and Dean Brannock, while Isabel Gravitt is also returning as their daughter Ellie. Margo Martindale will reprise her role as Maureen “Mo,” because honestly, would it even feel like The Watcher without at least one neighbor making everybody uncomfortable?

The news comes a long time after Season 1 debuted on Netflix in October 2022. The seven-episode thriller followed Nora and Dean after they purchased what was supposed to be their dream home, only to begin receiving increasingly disturbing letters from someone calling themselves “The Watcher.” Throw in an entire neighborhood filled with people who seemed capable of knowing way too much about everybody else's business, and suddenly that dream house wasn't looking like such a great investment.

The season ended without giving viewers a clean answer about who was behind the letters, which wasn't exactly surprising considering the real-life case that inspired the series remains unsolved. What was surprising was just how long Netflix went without saying much about what came next.

Netflix renewed The Watcher in November 2022 following a successful first season, but Season 2 seemingly disappeared into the streaming void afterward. There were no new episodes, no major production updates and plenty of time for viewers to wonder whether the second season was ever actually going to happen. Well, dust off the binoculars because somebody is watching again.

Netflix says Season 2 will follow the Brannocks after the events of that ambiguous first-season finale, although specific plot details are still being kept under wraps. Considering where Dean and Nora were mentally by the end of Season 1, there is certainly plenty of unfinished business to explore and that's before another creepy letter inevitably finds its way into somebody's mailbox.

Bringing Watts and Cannavale back is also a strong indication that Season 2 won't simply reset the series with an entirely new family. The Brannocks are still at the center of the story, which should give the new season an opportunity to dig deeper into what happened to them after their obsession with the Watcher consumed so much of their lives.

The first season certainly gave Netflix a reason to keep the mystery alive. The Watcher spent five weeks on Netflix's Global Top 10 English-language TV list and reached the Top 10 in more than 90 countries.

T

here is currently no premiere date for Season 2, so viewers shouldn't start checking the mailbox just yet. But after nearly four years of wondering whether The Watcher would ever actually return, production finally moving forward is a pretty significant development.

Now the bigger question is whether Season 2 will finally give us some answers or simply give us another neighborhood full of people who desperately need to learn how to mind their own business.
