Man in a dark shirt sits at a table, holding hands with a woman. Wine and salad are on the table. The mood is intimate and warm.

Well, it can’t all be great, right? There was a lot going on in the latest episode of The Rookie and I hope we’re not back to storyline whiplash.

Bailey’s Potential Move to D.C.

Bailey’s old captain meets with her and John to talk about the possibility of Bailey joining him and a team inside the Pentagon. Sounds exciting, but Bailey didn’t seem like she was too into it at first, but as the offer lingered, it became obvious this was something she was considering. She even proposed this idea to John and despite insisting that their life was already perfect in Los Angeles, John thought about what a move to D.C. could look like for them.

After having a talk with Grey, John learned that this move would mean having to start all over again as a rookie. Not only would he, again, be the oldest rookie in his class, he’s even older than he was when he first became a rookie – so let’s be honest with ourselves here: John would be playing himself if he even attempted this move.

Once John tells Bailey he doesn’t think it’s worth it to start over again, she doesn’t seem to be on the same page. This is a great opportunity for Bailey – and the fact that her old captain thought of her first is telling of how great she would be in this role. So there’s no way she should turn it down right? After telling John she’s considering taking on this role and making the move a question hangs in the air: what does this mean for them?

The Enemy of my Enemy…

I wanted to be more invested in this episode’s case, but there was too much going on. While out together, Bailey and John witness a shooting. Nyla and Angela take on the case and while reviewing the footage, it turns out one of the shooters was a member of the Southern Front gang. The second shooter was a black man which is odd because the Southern Front are well known for being white supremacists, so how are these two working together? And why did they go after this man?

At first I thought that the wife of the deceased hired them to do a hit for her. The way she was adamant on seeing the body, you know, like she needed to confirm he was really dead? She was then caught having a steamy moment with another man in the stairwell – she had to have been involved right? Wrong. She wasn’t, she was just enjoying her open marriage and his death had nothing to do with that.

When Miles was talking to Celina about the case, she offered him some help on how to get some intel on gang activity. While doing a reddit deep dive, Miles came across something that would help in this current case. Circling back to why someone from a white supremist group would work with a black man – with Miles’ deep dive, we learn that the two shooters, identified as Ryder and Kingston, were foster brothers. The reason they killed this man, Fred, was because he was involved in a hit and run that severely injured their foster mother.

This case involved violence and more violence, and it felt never ending. There was no moment of redemption for either party; Ryder died trying to flee from police, Kingston was killed by someone from his gang who wanted to prove himself and also snitched that Kingston was working with a Southern Front, and there was a lot of gunfire when officers raided the home. I know that they can’t all be wins, but this one just felt like an unnecessary loss to me.

Wopez

I will always love Angela and Wesley’s dynamic together. This is a couple that the writers get right all the time; I’ve never been disappointed (I hope I didn’t just jinx it). With Del Monte out of the running, Wesley was approached to run for District Attorney. This came as a surprise to him, and at first he was against it. Even Angela thought it was a bad idea to bring this kind of attention to their family.

Wesley, though, started to consider it and Angela didn’t want this to happen. She concocted a plan to have Nyla and James come over for dinner to plead her case to Wesley just how much of a bad idea this was, however, the plan backfired. Nyla and James thought Wesley had great points to run – it aligns with the work he’s always wanted to provide for the community.

After some thought, Angela decided that this would be the best for Wesley. It’s the way they communicate their feelings and compromise for each other that makes them so loveable to me. I can’t wait to see how this storyline progresses throughout the season.

Lucy and the Lost Machete

Lucy entrusting Smitty to log evidence made for a funny scenario in this episode. With the new change to how they log evidence, a key item in her court case, a bloody machete, goes missing. In a panic, she asks Tim for help to find it in the evidence closet, but the case numbers are all wrong. Luckily they could find the evidence by entering the date of the crime, and you’d think this would be easier right? Not when you leave it up to Smitty.

Because he didn’t read the new logging memo, he entered over two months of evidence incorrectly which means if they were going to find the missing machete, they’d have to search two months worth of boxes.

They did eventually find the machete and all went well in court for Lucy. What was even funnier was that Lucy hinted at the possibility that Smitty could be doing this on purpose – if he keeps messing up, people wouldn’t trust him with important things. It’s genius!

I won’t be adding this episode to my list of favorites, but it had some good moments. What’d you think of the new episode of The Rookie? Share your thoughts below!
