The Chi Season 8 Premiere Review: Reg Returns and Nobody Is Safe

Season 8 of The Chi opens with “The Coldest Winter,” and honestly, this episode feels heavy from the very beginning. Everybody is grieving, angry, lonely, or trying to survive, and the vibe of the season already feels darker than usual.

Right away we see Victor, played by Luke James, locked up while tensions between him and Shaad (Jason Weaver) continue to rise in prison. Their scenes together are intense because both characters feel trapped with no real way out. Meanwhile Jake is left alone trying to protect Victor’s house, but that becomes almost impossible once Reg returns.

And speaking of Reg, Barton Fitzpatrick immediately steals every scene he’s in. Reg comes back like a storm. He’s reckless, dangerous, and completely unbothered by the idea of going back to jail. Whether he’s running pills through the city, threatening people, or taking over Victor’s house, you can feel the tension rise anytime he appears. His final confrontation with Jake is easily one of the best scenes in the episode.

The emotional core of the episode though belongs to Emmett, played by Jacob Latimore. Emmett is still struggling with losing his mother, and seeing Darnell (Rolando Boyce) trying to move forward with life only makes things harder for him. Their late-night conversation about grief and fatherhood was one of the strongest scenes in the episode because it felt real and honest. Learning that Darnell (Rolando Boyce) and Riley (Wendy Raquel Robinson) have been dating for the past few months and staying with Emmett and Keisha while their place gets a new furnace shocked me. I did not expect him to move on so quickly but again the vulnerability shown in the intense conversations between Darnell and Emmett shows the audience that this has not been an easy 6 months.

We get introduced to Emmet's son Devontae played by Anthony b Jenkins. He  has been getting in trouble and Shay wants him to stay with Emmett full time. To be honest this kid is a handful. 

Another interesting development is the fact that Charles (Rotimi) and Zuri (Karrueche Tran) are getting close as well. Zuri is also helping Keisha and Emmett with watching the kids. We are also introduced to a new gang member who has an extreme distrust of Bacari and wants to be Nucks (Cortez Smith) second in command. His name is Rafi Played by newcomer Darryll

Dunning II and by the end of the episode he leaves “The Mob” and declares his allegiance to Reg and that's not the only person.

Another newcomer to the show Jordan played by Laila Odom works at the local hospital and she is also stealing pills for Reg to sell, but what makes this surprising development even more juicy is the fact that she is in a relationship with Keith (Jackie Long) who as far as I can tell is a high ranking member of the gang. Keith isn’t to happy about this understandably but reg doesn’t seem to care.

There’s also a lot happening with Nuck, Keisha, Papa, and Bakari. Bakari especially continues proving he talks way too much, and it’s clearly going to get him into serious trouble this season. Papa’s grief storyline also surprised me, especially after learning Pastor Zeke was murdered in the off season. The show never ceases to surprise the audience, especially with big unexpected deaths and unexpected moments in general.

Overall, “The Coldest Winter” is a strong season premiere that balances emotional storytelling with street drama really well. It sets up a chaotic season full of tension, grief, and conflict, and honestly, I’m hooked already.
