Hollywood just pulled off the entertainment equivalent of a blockbuster NFL trade deadline, and the dust is going to take a minute to settle. In a simultaneous double-drop that has industry insiders dropping their iced matchas, director Ryan Coogler is packing up his Proximity Media banner and moving to Netflix, while comedy royalty Quinta Brunson is leaving Warner Bros. behind to sign a massive overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television.
Quinta Brunson Gets Her Disney Fairytale
Let’s start with the woman who single-handedly saved network television comedies. Quinta Brunson has officially signed a five-year overall TV deal with Disney. For anyone keeping score, she is exiting her previous home at Warner Bros. Television. Secure that mouse-eared bag.
Under her Fifth Chance Productions banner, Brunson will now write, develop, and executive produce new projects across Disney Entertainment Television’s massive umbrella. But do not panic, Abbott Elementary fans. The shift will not disrupt our favorite Philadelphia public school. Because Abbott is co-produced by 20th TV and WB, and already airs on ABC, this move essentially brings her completely in-house. Brunson reportedly has an eight-season acting contract locked down for the show, ensuring she stays firmly in the mockumentary director's chair for its entire lifespan.
Honestly? It is a brilliant play. With Warner Bros. currently distracted by the massive fallout from the Department of Justice clearing its mega-merger with Paramount, Brunson chose stability, creative freedom, and a studio that actually knows how to market her brand of comedy.
Ryan Coogler Swaps the Marvel Sandbox for Netflix Cash
While Disney was busy rolling out the red carpet for Brunson, they were simultaneously waving goodbye to Ryan Coogler. The Black Panther director, alongside co-founders Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, has signed an exclusive, multi-year TV partnership with Netflix.
This ends Proximity Media’s previous five-year television stint with Disney. Under that old contract, Coogler’s team developed highly anticipated Marvel spin-offs like Ironheart and the animated Eyes of Wakanda. But with Disney CEO Bob Iger loudly shouting from the rooftops about cutting back on Marvel streaming content to focus on theaters, it seems Coogler realized the TV pipeline at Disney was getting a bit too clogged.
By moving to Netflix, Proximity Media gets a blank check and an algorithm eager for premium, culture-defining drama series. Netflix has essentially "traded Ryans" over the last few seasons, losing Ryan Murphy back to Disney, only to swoop in and snatch up Coogler. Not us feeling a little emotional about the end of an era, but business is business.
From a programming perspective, this is a win-win that highlights exactly where these platforms are heading. Disney is doubling down on safe, universally beloved, advertiser-friendly IP like Brunson's comedies. Netflix, on the other hand, is continuing its quest to be the ultimate home for high-prestige, binge-worthy dramas by securing one of the most respected Black filmmakers of his generation.
It is a rare moment where a major corporate shakeup actually makes sense for the creators involved. Brunson gets the institutional backing of the biggest media empire on earth, and Coogler escapes the restrictive corporate mandates of the superhero machine to build something entirely fresh.
