Rome is Burning: Everything We Know About Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Series

Hooded figure in ornate white robes stands poised with hidden blades, overlooking a historic cityscape under a cloudy sky. Mysterious mood.

After years of lurking in the shadows and suffering through that 2016 Michael Fassbender movie we all collectively agreed to forget, Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series is finally stepping into the light. And no, it’s not another weary retread of the Crusades. The streamers have finally decided to give us what the fans have been screaming for: a high-budget, back-stabbing romp through the chaos of Ancient Rome.

Production is officially underway at the legendary Cinecittà Studios, and from the look of the cast and the timeline, Netflix isn't just playing around with a hidden blade, they’re aiming for the jugular.

The Setting: Nero, Fire, and Chaos

Forget the Renaissance or the American Revolution; we are heading back to 64 AD. For those who slept through history class, this is the year Emperor Nero reportedly fiddled while Rome burned. The series is set to explore the Great Fire of Rome, providing the perfect, smoky backdrop for an original story that hasn’t been touched by the Ubisoft games.

Expect a heavy dose of political intrigue within the imperial court, featuring historical heavyweights like the philosopher Seneca the Younger. It’s the perfect playground for a new Assassin to navigate a city that is literally and figuratively collapsing.

The Cast: New Faces in the Empire

The production recently announced four major additions to the ensemble, proving they’re raiding some of the best talent in genre TV. Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (Foundation) and Youssef Kerkour (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) are hopping on board, alongside Mirren Mack (The Witcher: Blood Origin) and breakout star Louis McCartney from Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

They join an already stacked lineup featuring Toby Wallace, Lola Petticrew, and the powerhouse duo of Claes Bang and Noomi Rapace. While character details are being guarded more closely than a Piece of Eden, the sheer caliber of this cast suggests we’re getting a character-driven drama, not just a series of parkour stunts.

The Creative Kill Team

Netflix isn’t taking any chances behind the camera either. The series is being steered by director Johan Renck (Chernobyl) and showrunners Roberto Patino and David Wiener. If anyone can make a burning city look both haunting and prestigious, it’s the guy who gave us the dread of a nuclear meltdown.

Filming is slated to continue through October 2026 across Italy’s Lazio and Tuscany regions. If the gods (and the editors) are kind, we should see a premiere date landing in the second half of 2027.

The Verdict (So Far)

The Assassin’s Creed Netflix series finally seems to have the right ingredients: a fresh historical era, a cast that actually knows how to act, and a production scale that matches the games' ambition. Whether it can break the "video game adaptation curse" remains to be seen, but as of right now, our eagle vision is locked on this one.

Do you think Ancient Rome is the right move for the franchise, or should they have stuck to the games? Let us know in the comments below or hit us up on socials!

Are you planning to watch the series for the lore or just to see Noomi Rapace inevitably out-act everyone on screen?
