RJ Decker Renewed for Season 2: Florida’s Sweatiest Detective Returns

Man in red patterned shirt and sunglasses walks on a sandy beach. Background shows blurred buildings, blue sky, and people. Relaxed mood.

Pack your bug spray and prepare for another round of swampy justice because ABC has officially decided that R.J. Decker isn’t quite finished making a mess of the Sunshine State. In a move that surprised exactly zero people who have glanced at the Hulu trending charts lately, the network confirmed today that R.J. Decker is renewed for Season 2.

The renewal serves as the final piece of a very tidy puzzle for ABC. By greenlighting a second outing for Scott Speedman’s disillusioned private eye, the network has achieved a rare "full house," renewing its entire scripted roster for the 2026-2027 season. It turns out that leaning into Carl Hiaasen’s specific brand of Florida weirdness was a smarter move than another generic procedural set in a city where people actually wear suits.

While the linear ratings for the freshman season were what we might politely call "modest," the digital numbers told a different story. Decker proved to be a massive hit for the pajama-wearing demographic, maintaining a constant presence in the Top 10 on both Hulu and Disney+. Apparently, there is a significant appetite for watching a disgraced photographer deal with bass fishing tournaments and various low-level criminals while looking perpetually tired.

Showrunner Rob Doherty, the man who previously made us care about a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, has successfully translated Hiaasen’s Double Whammy into something that feels gritty without losing its sense of the absurd. Scott Speedman remains the perfect anchor for this madness, playing Decker with the right amount of "I’d rather be anywhere else" energy. He’ll be joined once again by Jaina Lee Ortiz and the rest of the ensemble who survived the first season’s humidity.

The Season 2 pickup is particularly well-timed given that cliffhanger finale. We last saw Decker under a heavy cloud of suspicion following a death that was as messy as a Florida afternoon thunderstorm. Now that the ink is dry on the renewal, we can finally look forward to seeing how he navigates the fallout and which local eccentric will try to kill him next.

Expect Season 2 to dive deeper into the murky waters of local corruption, likely with a few more guest stars playing the kind of weirdos you only find at a roadside orange stand. With the full backing of the network and a growing streaming audience, R.J. Decker is proof that sometimes, the underdog with a camera and a grudge is exactly what TV needs.
