‘Revival’ Canceled After One Season at SYFY — Guess the Dead Aren’t the Only Ones Staying Buried

Well, this is awkward. A television series about dead people mysteriously coming back to life has officially been killed off, and this time, there doesn't appear to be a resurrection in sight. SYFY has canceled Revival after just one season, proving that even a show built around second chances isn't guaranteed to get one of its own.

The supernatural mystery starring Melanie Scrofano premiered in June 2025 and wrapped its first season in August. More than a year later, fans finally have an answer about its future, although it's certainly not the one they were hoping for. The network has decided not to move forward with Season 2, leaving another intriguing genre series in television's increasingly crowded cancellation graveyard.

And here we thought the people of Wausau, Wisconsin, had problems keeping things dead.

A Killer Premise That Deserved More Time

Based on the Image Comics series created by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton, Revival wasn't interested in serving up another predictable zombie apocalypse. Instead, it introduced a small Wisconsin community where recently deceased residents suddenly returned to life, looking and behaving much like their former selves.

Sounds like a miracle, right? Well, not so fast.

These unexpected homecomings created a nightmare of suspicion, paranoia, family drama, and murder. Scrofano played Dana Cypress, a local police officer and single mother who found herself investigating a disturbing mystery while trying to navigate a town where even death couldn't be trusted.

The series also starred Romy Weltman as Dana's sister Em, David James Elliott as Sheriff Wayne Cypress, and Andy McQueen as CDC scientist Ibrahim Ramin. Created for television by Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce, the show blended small-town secrets with supernatural horror, giving its characters plenty of reasons to question whether bringing someone back from the dead was such a wonderful idea after all.

Unfortunately, we'll never get to see where a second season might have taken those stories.

SYFY, We Need to Talk About These Cancellations

Here's where things become especially frustrating. Revival arrived with an interesting concept, an established comic book following, and Scrofano, who already knew a thing or two about carrying a supernatural television series thanks to Wynonna Earp.

Yet the show lasted only 10 episodes, with its final installment airing August 14, 2025. Fans then spent more than a year waiting for a renewal announcement that never came. That's a long time to leave a series sitting in television limbo, particularly one whose entire premise revolved around mysteries that deserved room to develop. At some point, the silence practically becomes its own season finale, except nobody asked for that storyline.

And what makes the cancellation even more disappointing is that Revival wasn't simply another supernatural series throwing monsters at the screen and hoping something would stick. It had a genuinely intriguing question at its center: What happens when the people you're supposed to mourn suddenly return, and you have no idea whether you should embrace them or run in the opposite direction?

That's the kind of premise that could have fueled several seasons of secrets, betrayals, and family chaos. Instead, we're getting a cancellation announcement and another reminder that television networks don't always have the patience to let an interesting story grow.

SYFY hasn't publicly provided a detailed reason for the decision, so we aren't going to pretend to know what went on behind closed doors. But with the network's original scripted lineup continuing to shrink, it's fair to wonder what kind of future remains for fans looking for something beyond reruns and familiar franchises.

Could ‘Revival’ Find Another Home?

Given the show's premise, asking whether Revival could come back feels almost mandatory. After all, if dead people can suddenly start walking around Wisconsin again, surely a canceled television series deserves at least a little hope.

Unfortunately, there is currently no announced plan for another network or streaming service to rescue the series. That doesn't mean a comeback is impossible, but until someone actually steps forward with a deal, fans probably shouldn't start planning a Season 2 watch party.

Of course, Revival already has a life beyond television thanks to its comic book origins. Fans who want to explore more of the mythology can always turn to the source material, although that doesn't exactly replace seeing Scrofano and the rest of the cast continue their stories onscreen.

And perhaps that's the most irritating part of this cancellation. Television keeps looking for fresh concepts, yet when something comes along that isn't the hundredth variation of the same old formula, it can still disappear before establishing a lasting audience.

Revival was about a town learning that death wasn't always the end of the story. Unfortunately, SYFY has decided that one season is exactly where this particular story ends.

Were you watching Revival, and do you think SYFY pulled the plug too soon? Or was one season enough?
