Prime Video has officially dropped the first look at Ride or Die, and if the new photos are any indication, this series plans to sprint directly into the “wildly entertaining summer binge” conversation without asking permission first. Starring Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer and Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham, Ride or Die premieres July 15 on
Prime Video with all eight episodes dropping at once. Because apparently sleep schedules are optional now.
The action-comedy follows Debbie Claybourne (Spencer), a woman who believes she knows everything about her best friend Judith Burton (Waddingham). Unfortunately for Debbie, Judith neglected to mention one tiny detail: she’s an international assassin. Honestly, that feels like information that should come up at brunch at least once.
The newly released images tease exactly the kind of stylish, globe-trotting mess audiences love from the genre. Spencer looks perfectly exasperated in several shots, which feels deeply relatable considering her character is suddenly dodging criminals, assassins, and law enforcement across Europe. Meanwhile, Waddingham appears entirely too comfortable holding weapons and staring down danger like she’s ordering coffee.
And somehow, it works beautifully.
The chemistry between Spencer and Waddingham already looks like the show’s secret weapon. Spencer’s grounded comedic timing paired with Waddingham’s larger-than-life energy creates the kind of odd-couple dynamic that action-comedies desperately need to survive. The first-look photos practically scream, “These women are about to make terrible decisions together,” and honestly, television could use more of that.
There’s also an undeniable cinematic quality to the project. That makes sense considering Ride or Die comes from creator Tessa Coates, with Matt Miller serving as showrunner and Peyton Reed directing. Reed’s knack for balancing humor with fast-paced action appears to be all over this series, giving the preview images a slick, energetic vibe without tipping into self-serious territory. Nobody wants two leads philosophizing about morality while cars explode in the background. Keep it moving.
The supporting cast only adds to the intrigue, featuring Bill Nighy, Ed Skrein, Sylvia Hoeks, Calam Lynch, Savannah Steyn, Jamie Parker, and Jacky Ido. Translation: there are enough suspicious-looking people here to guarantee at least six betrayals and one dramatically timed reveal.
What makes the Ride or Die first look especially appealing is that it doesn’t appear interested in becoming another generic spy thriller drowning in gloomy lighting and emotional monologues. The series seems fully aware that watching Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham outrun assassins across Europe should actually be fun. Revolutionary concept, really.
Prime Video has spent the last few years chasing big, flashy originals, but Ride or Die may have something many streaming series lack: personality. The mix of action, comedy, friendship, and absolute disaster energy gives the show an identity that immediately stands out in an overcrowded streaming lineup.
If the series delivers on the promise of these first-look photos, Ride or Die could easily become one of the summer’s most entertaining streaming obsessions. At minimum, viewers can probably expect bullets flying, sarcastic banter, expensive European locations, and Hannah Waddingham looking impossibly cool while everyone else panics.
That alone feels worth the price of admission.
