Looking for NCIS: Sydney? Here's Why It Didn't Return With the Other NCIS Shows

Tuesday nights are once again filled with crime scenes, federal investigations, and agents who rarely seem to get a quiet day at the office. CBS brought its NCIS franchise back on October 6, giving viewers three straight hours of action. However, anyone expecting to see all their favorite teams return probably noticed that one was missing.
NCIS: Sydney didn't make the trip back to primetime with its fellow franchise shows, leaving some viewers wondering what happened to the Australian spinoff. With networks constantly making changes to their schedules, it's understandable that an absent series might raise a few questions.
Fortunately, there's no cancellation to report. Michelle Mackey and her team still have work to do, but CBS is making fans wait until 2027 to see it.
Three NCIS Shows Returned, but Sydney Was Left Out
CBS kicked off its Tuesday lineup with NCIS at 8 p.m., followed by the series premiere of NCIS: New York at 9 p.m. and the return of NCIS: Origins at 10 p.m. That gives the franchise control of an entire night, with the original series, a new spinoff, and a prequel all sharing the spotlight.
The arrival of NCIS: New York, which brings LL Cool J back as Sam Hanna, also gives viewers another team to get acquainted with. Meanwhile, Origins continues exploring Leroy Jethro Gibbs' earlier years, leaving the Australian branch as the only current NCIS series sitting out the fall premieres.
It's a noticeable absence, particularly for fans who have grown attached to the Sydney team and its combination of American and Australian investigators. However, the decision doesn't mean the network has lost interest in the series.
CBS simply has a different place for it on the schedule.
Sydney Has a Return Planned for 2027
Rather than launching all four NCIS shows together, CBS placed NCIS: Sydney on its midseason schedule for the 2026–2027 television season. The network is taking a similar approach with Matlock and Ghosts, which are also returning later instead of joining the regular fall lineup.
That means viewers shouldn't expect new Sydney episodes during the current October premiere rush. The fourth season is planned for the second half of the broadcast season, although CBS has yet to provide a specific premiere date. There also hasn't been an official explanation establishing why Sydney, specifically, was selected for the later rollout. With three other NCIS shows already occupying Tuesday night, the scheduling arrangement makes sense, but anything beyond the network's confirmed plans would be speculation. At least viewers can cross one concern off their list: Season 4 is happening.
The Sydney Team Hasn't Been Sitting Around
While fans are waiting for the series to return, production hasn't been standing still. Filming on Season 4 began in late April 2026 in Sydney, Australia, and its surrounding harbor areas.
The upcoming season will continue following the joint task force made up of U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents and Australian Federal Police officers. Their work investigating crimes connected to the Indo-Pacific region has given the franchise its own international flavor, along with a team that doesn't always agree on how to get the job done.
Season 4 is expected to bring more dangerous cases, government secrets, and personal complications. In other words, Mackey and company will have plenty to deal with whenever CBS finally puts them back on the schedule.
The international setting remains one of the show's biggest differences from its franchise relatives. While the other teams are handling business closer to home, Sydney has an entirely different backdrop for its investigations, and the fourth season will continue that approach.
What to Watch Until NCIS: Sydney Returns
For viewers who need their Australian NCIS fix before 2027, the first three seasons are available to stream on Paramount+. That leaves plenty of time for a rewatch, especially for anyone who wants to revisit the team's investigations before the next chapter begins. In the meantime, CBS still has a full Tuesday schedule for franchise fans. Between the flagship series, Sam Hanna's return in New York, and Gibbs' younger years on Origins, there's no shortage of NCIS stories to follow.
As for Sydney, the missing premiere isn't a sign that the team has reached the end of the road. CBS has renewed the series, production has been underway, and Season 4 remains part of the network's plans. The only thing missing now is an actual premiere date, and that's one piece of information fans will have to keep waiting for.
