Julia Schlaepfer, Michiel Huisman, and Benjamin Bratt Lead Major TV Casting News

Grab your remote and clear your DVR, because the casting gods have finally decided to bless us with more than just another reality reboot. While we’ve all been rotting on our couches waiting for something, anything, to fill the void left by our favorite binge-watches, Hollywood has been busy playing musical chairs with some of the biggest names in the business.

From HBO Max (or Max, or whatever they’re calling themselves this week) to Prime Video, today’s TV casting news proves that the industry is leaning hard into established talent to save us from mediocre procedurals. Whether it’s a Game of Thrones alum playing a grumpy cop or a Yellowstone-adjacent career shift for a veteran movie star, the "Peak TV" era is desperately trying to claw its way back into your living room.

Julia Schlaepfer Joins the Family Chaos in "How to Survive Without Me"

First up, Julia Schlaepfer, whom you likely recognize from 1923 or The Politician is trading the 1920s frontier for the equally treacherous landscape of modern Los Angeles. She has officially joined the HBO Max pilot "How to Survive Without Me" as Liz, the self-described "gorgeous mess" of the De Angelis family.

The premise sounds like a recipe for a high-budget identity crisis: the family is reeling from the death of their matriarch, Beverly, who is apparently still trying to micromanage their lives from beyond the grave. Schlaepfer joins a heavy-hitting ensemble including Ray Romano, Joshua Jackson, and Kaley Cuoco. If this pilot actually makes it to series, expect Liz to provide the necessary "I forgot to pay my rent but my hair looks great" energy that every prestige family drama requires.

Michiel Huisman Takes a Bite Out of Big Apple Crime

Over at NBC, Michiel Huisman is hanging up his Daenerys Targaryen fan club membership to join Taylor Schilling in the new drama pilot What the Dead Know. Huisman is set to play William Grant, an NYPD homicide detective who believes justice is "black and white."

We’ve seen Huisman play the romantic lead and the brooding warrior, but watching him navigate the gritty streets of New York as a rigid lawman will be a change of pace. Pairing him with Schilling, who we haven't seen in a solid lead role since Orange Is the New Black is a smart move by the peacock network. Let’s just hope the script offers more than the standard "detective with a dark past" tropes we’ve seen a thousand times before.

Benjamin Bratt: From "Poker Face" to the Idaho Frontier

Finally, Benjamin Bratt is having the kind of week that makes other actors’ agents weep. Bratt has snagged not one, but two major recurring roles. First, he’s heading to Prime Video for Season 2 of Ballard (the Bosch spin-off that refuses to quit). He’ll play Ryan Ainsley, a former DEA agent who ditched the badge to become a cowboy on an Idaho ranch. Because apparently, every actor over 50 is legally required to play a cowboy in at least one streaming series.

When he isn’t wrangling cattle, Bratt will be over at Hulu for Dan Fogelman’s new football drama, The Land. He’s playing an NFL coach alongside Christopher Meloni. It’s a lot of testosterone for one television season, but if anyone can make a transition from DEA agent to NFL strategist look effortless, it’s Bratt.

The Verdict

Between HBO’s penchant for family trauma and NBC’s never-ending thirst for crime procedurals, these new TV shows are shaping up to be more than just filler. The sheer amount of star power being thrown at these pilots suggests that networks are finally realizing that we won't watch just anything, we need a reason to put down our phones.

I would watch Michiel Huisman, read the phone book, of course "what the dead know" is all I'm having palpitations about!
