High Potential – Season 2, Episode 15 “Pie in the Sky” Recap

Three people intently look at a tablet held by a fourth person. A woman covers her mouth in surprise. Indoor setting, formal attire.

“Astronaut murdered by a pie to the face?!” That was honestly my first reaction when starting High Potential Season 2, Episode 15, “Pie in the Sky.” This show always finds creative ways to open an episode, but this one might be one of the wildest yet and somehow it still works.

The episode begins with beloved astronaut Teddy Barrows being killed during what should have been a celebratory event when someone smashes a pie into his face. It sounds ridiculous at first, but the tone shifts quickly when the team learns the pie was laced with a nerve toxin. Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), Daphne (Javicia Leslie), and Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) jump right into the investigation, starting with Teddy’s fiancée, Heidi Choi, who was standing right next to him when it happened. Security footage leads them to suspect a college track athlete, and at first it really looks like an open-and-shut case when they find an empty pie box in a dorm room.

What made this episode stand out for me was how personal the case became for Morgan. Her son Elliot admired Teddy and saw him as a hero, which added emotional stakes to the investigation. Kaitlin Olson continues to impress me. She is an amazing show lead.

Meanwhile, Lt. Soto (Judy Reyes) heads to New York to track down Willa Quinn, and those scenes added a lot of tension to the episode. Watching Soto stand her ground and outsmart people while chasing leads was honestly just as interesting as the main case. The return of Captain Wagner also stirred things up, especially when he revealed he knows more about Arthur than anyone expected.

Back on the case, the team eventually learns the college student was set up and didn’t even know the pie was poisoned. That leads to the biggest twist of the episode, Heidi, Teddy’s fiancée, was actually behind the murder. Morgan connects small clues, including a pen Teddy always carried and word choices in his speech, to figure out that Teddy planned to reveal he had brain cancer. Heidi killed him to stop the announcement, which was not an ending I saw coming at all.

And just when things seem settled, the episode drops another bombshell, Willa Quinn is already in Los Angeles. Overall, “Pie in the Sky” was another clever, surprising episode that proves this season keeps getting stronger with every installment.

I liked the way Morgan seemed more concerned than usual. Like personal.
