HBO Max just passed on American Blue, the highly anticipated gritty cop drama starring Milo Ventimiglia. The streaming giant officially declined to move forward with the pilot, leaving fans of the This Is Us alum wondering where it all went sideways. While the news feels like a sudden cancellation, the project is not entirely dead. Warner Bros. Television is already packing its bags to shop the pilot to other broadcast networks and streaming services. Still, the decision marks a sharp shift in strategy for HBO Max's upcoming programming slate.

The Anatomy of a Casual Discard

On paper, American Blue had the exact pedigree that usually commands a straight-to-series order. Milo Ventimiglia signed on to play Brian "Milk" Milkovich, a brooding officer returning to his hometown of Joliet, Illinois, to resuscitate a failing police force while sorting out his own baggage.

The behind-the-scenes talent was equally heavy-hitting. HBO Max originally commissioned American Blue alongside How to Survive Without Me, a family drama starring Ray Romano, Kaley Cuoco, and Joshua Jackson. While the cop drama got the boot, the Romano vehicle is reportedly cruising toward a full series pickup.

The silver lining here is that because American Blue was built for a high-episode, lower-cost broadcast style, it is perfectly suited for a network like NBC or CBS. Warner Bros. TV will likely find a buyer who appreciates a reliable, old-school police procedural.
