Disney has officially unveiled the first look at Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, and if the teaser is any indication, the franchise is ready to turn up the drama, the glitter, and the time travel consequences. The fifth installment in the blockbuster Descendants saga promises high stakes in present day Wonderland, a rising villain with a personal vendetta, and enough music and choreography to keep dance floors busy all summer.
The preview debuted ahead of the Descendants ZOMBIES Worlds Collide Concert Special on Disney+, immediately setting social media buzzing. With a summer premiere planned for both Disney+ and Disney Channel, Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is positioning itself as one of the platform’s marquee family releases of the year.
Picking up after the events of 2024’s Descendants: The Rise of Red, the new film follows Red, played by Kylie Cantrall, and Chloe, portrayed by Malia Baker, as they attempt to settle back into a version of happily ever after. Of course, in the Descendants universe, happily ever after always comes with fine print. The teaser makes it clear that tampering with time has consequences, and the pair’s most dangerous secret, a time traveling pocket watch, is now hidden inside the Royal Vault.
Unaware of the storm brewing around them, Red and Chloe face a formidable threat in Maddox Hatter, played by Leonardo Nam. The once familiar character emerges as a ruthless villain determined to seize control of the pocket watch and bend time, and Wonderland, to his will. The darker tone hinted at in the first look suggests a more layered narrative, one that leans into legacy, destiny, and the ripple effects of rewriting history.
Returning favorites include Melanie Paxson as the Fairy Godmother, Brandy as Cinderella, Paolo Montalban as King Charming, and Rita Ora as the Queen of Hearts. The expanding ensemble introduces new characters, adding fresh energy to the already sprawling fairy tale universe. With Kimmy Gatewood directing and choreography from Emmy Award winner Emilio Dosal, the film appears ready to deliver the elaborate musical numbers that have become synonymous with the franchise.
Since its 2015 debut, Descendants has dominated youth entertainment, with each of the original films ranking as the most watched cable movie of its release year. The 2024 installment, The Rise of Red, performed strongly on Disney+, further cementing the franchise’s streaming power.
With a vibrant Wonderland setting, an escalating villain arc, and the promise of more high concept musical storytelling, Descendants: Wicked Wonderland looks poised to extend the franchise’s reign. The summer premiere cannot come soon enough for fans eager to see how far this fairy tale is willing to go when time itself is on the line.
