Family relationships can be complicated, especially when old resentments refuse to stay buried. In Elsbeth Season 4, Episode 3, “Consciously Unsistered,” a bitter rivalry between two sisters leads to murder. Meanwhile, Elsbeth faces family troubles of her own when her mother arrives for a visit. The episode delivers another unusual murder mystery while exploring the complicated relationships between mothers, daughters, and siblings.

Singing Sisters

The episode opens with two sisters, Summer and Winter Redgrave, singing a cappella. They're competing for a chance to appear on USA Sings! Backstage, after finishing their performance, they're told only one of them has made it through the competition.

Summer Redgrave is the lucky sister. She goes on to win the competition, while Winter is left wondering what to do with her life. Summer eventually becomes a star, but Winter's entertainment dreams end before they really begin. This is where the sisters' very different paths begin.

Millionaire or Billionaire?

In the present day, Winter has built a thriving, multimillion-dollar business selling scented candles with sexy and unusual fragrances, along with an assortment of other high-end lifestyle and wellness products. Her company, Kreem, offers products designed to evoke feelings and make people feel good. With products sold globally, Winter has become quite the successful businesswoman.

Winter's busy day is interrupted by a visit from her sister, Summer. After her early success, Summer moved away from the family-style music she once performed with Winter and pursued a rock career. Unfortunately, her career eventually fell apart.

Now Summer wants to use her sister's success to make them both billionaires. She has an offer from a mass-production company called ShopBuy, which wants to purchase Kreem. Summer reminds Winter that she provided the financial backing to start the company. Winter believes Summer only gave her the money because she felt guilty about abandoning her during USA Sings! Summer is frustrated that Winter still hasn't gotten over what happened.

Winter makes it clear that she hasn't forgotten because the experience ruined her life. She's perfectly happy being a multimillionaire and refuses to let Summer ruin her life a second time. She even offers to reimburse Summer for the money she invested in Kreem. Unfortunately, Summer has another card to play. She reminds Winter about the original agreement she signed when starting the company. Summer's lawyers included a drag-along clause, meaning she doesn't need Winter's permission to sell Kreem to ShopBuy.

Later, Winter's assistant shows her the cheap knockoffs ShopBuy plans to market as Kreem products once the sale is completed. Winter is devastated because her attorneys have already told her there's nothing she can do to stop it. She was poor and inexperienced when she signed the original agreement, and now she's paying the price.

Winter asks her assistant not to tell the staff about the situation just yet. She wants everyone to believe she agreed to the sale. Her assistant praises Winter for being a wonderful boss, unlike Summer, and mentions that Summer has been testing the company's products at her apartment for future testimonials. Winter eventually calls a staff meeting to announce the upcoming sale. Knowing how stressful the situation has been, she decides to give everyone a mandatory company-wide detox as a gift.

The experience includes a buffet of edible insects and a selection of world-renowned lettuces prepared by Chef Pete. Winter won't participate because she wants her employees to have a safe space to discuss their feelings. Instead, she plans to spend the time in a sensory deprivation tank.

Lifestyle Crime of Passion

Winter visits Summer at her apartment to explain what Kreem means to her and why its products are so special. She believes the company's products make people happy and cannot simply be replicated by a mass-production company.

During the visit, Winter convinces Summer to try a cellulite-melting compression suit. She explains how dangerous the device can be before taking control of its settings.

Summer becomes trapped inside the suit and cannot escape. Winter walks away, leaving her sister to die. Afterward, she notices that some of her nail polish has come off. The stage is now set for another unusual murder investigation involving the NYPD's finest. Detective Nina Taylor and Elsbeth arrive to investigate Summer's death. Elsbeth becomes curious about the compression suit and discovers that it has only two settings, high and low. There is no off switch, meaning the device must be unplugged to stop it. Elsbeth recreates the final moments of Summer's life by lying on the sofa where her body was discovered. Both she and Detective Taylor have questions about what really happened.

Mom Visits

Meanwhile, Elsbeth's mother, Lydia, arrives for a visit, and their relationship is a little strained. Teddy acts as a buffer between them, asking his mother to tone down the fighting until after they meet Roy's parents. Teddy also has the honor of showing his grandmother around New York City. Unfortunately, Lydia's passive-aggressive attitude makes things difficult for Elsbeth.

Later, Lydia gets locked out of Elsbeth's apartment and heads to the NYPD precinct to wait for her daughter. While there, she meets Captain Wagner. It's funny how Lydia manages to give Captain Wagner chills. Detective Taylor offers him a few suggestions for dealing with her, and they actually work. Lydia and Wagner eventually get to know each other better, and she even gets along with several officers at the precinct. It's interesting how Lydia can be pleasant with so many other people while continuing to make things difficult for her own daughter.

Questions Answered and Case Concludes

Back at Kreem, Elsbeth and Detective Taylor question Winter about the compression suit. Winter shows them the company's actual compression suit and mentions her alibi: she was supposedly spending time in the deprivation tank when Summer died. Winter also drops several clues about Paul and the circumstances surrounding his firing. She seems determined to point the detectives toward him as Summer's murderer.

Elsbeth continues investigating Kreem and even spends some time in the deprivation tank herself. The swimsuit she chooses is perfectly Elsbeth! She enjoys the beginning of her experience, but things take an unpleasant turn when she gets out.

Fortunately, the experience gives Elsbeth another clue. She also begins seeing the real Winter beneath the carefully maintained image of a successful lifestyle entrepreneur. Elsbeth and Detective Taylor disagree about who committed the murder. As Taylor interrogates Paul, Elsbeth reviews more evidence and observes the questioning. Eventually, Paul provides another important clue that helps move the investigation forward.

Everything leads back to the sisters' days on USA Sings! Elsbeth interrupts Winter's tribute to Summer and confronts her about the murder. She understands that family members can be hard on one another and that relationships aren't always easy. Winter declares that she “unsistered” Summer years ago and insists she has no family. Detective Taylor handcuffs her and leads her away. What Winter fails to recognize is that losing USA Sings! helped put her on the path to becoming a successful entrepreneur. She spent so many years resenting her sister that she couldn't appreciate what she had accomplished. Meanwhile, Elsbeth finally opens up to her mother about their relationship. Unfortunately, Lydia doesn't reciprocate, leaving Elsbeth disappointed.

Final Thoughts

This was a good episode, especially because parts of the murder investigation paralleled what was happening in Elsbeth's personal life. The complicated relationship between Summer and Winter reflected some of the emotional struggles Elsbeth faced with her mother.

I also liked that Elsbeth had Detective Taylor to commiserate with about their mother problems. It's always good to have someone who understands what you're going through, especially when family relationships become difficult.

It was sad to see Lydia fail to recognize how wonderful her daughter is. Captain Wagner even tried to help when he noticed how badly Lydia treated Elsbeth. I was glad someone else could see what was happening. We finally got to meet Elsbeth's mother, and she wasn't at all what I expected. Perhaps we'll learn more about the reasons behind her behavior in future episodes.

Despite the melancholy undercurrents, I really liked this episode. The murder mystery was entertaining, the family drama gave us something to think about, and Elsbeth remained as delightful as ever.
