CBS’s Einstein Adds Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Because Every Genius Needs Backup

In the land of network procedurals, CBS has a very specific "type." Usually, it involves a quirky consultant with a high IQ and a low social filter helping a fed-up detective solve crimes that the local PD apparently couldn’t crack with a Google search.

Enter Einstein, the latest addition to the "Brilliant Guy, Grumpy Cop" cinematic universe. While the show already had our attention by casting the internet’s favorite boyfriend, Matthew Gray Gubler, it just leveled up significantly. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is officially joining the cast, proving that even a show about Albert Einstein’s great-grandson knows when to bring in the real heavy hitters.

The Formula for a Network Hit

If you’ve been living under a rock (or just haven't touched a remote since Criminal Minds ended), here’s the gist: Gubler plays Lewis Einstein, a brilliant, tenured professor who happens to be the great-grandson of the Albert Einstein. Naturally, he’s a bit of a disaster. When his "bad-boy antics" (which we assume involve physics-based pranks) land him in legal hot water, he’s forced to work with the police.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor joins the fray as Captain Frost. According to the character breakdown, Frost is a veteran officer who has put in her ten thousand hours and is essentially checking the calendar every five minutes until her retirement. She’s the weary counterweight to Lewis’s chaotic energy, and honestly, we already feel for her.

Why This Casting Matters (Beyond the Awards)

Ellis-Taylor isn't just any "series regular" addition. We’re talking about an Oscar nominee (King Richard) and an Emmy favorite who has been consistently elevating every project she touches, from Lovecraft Country to Justified: City Primeval. Seeing her trade barbs with Gubler and the recently cast Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) is the kind of TV alchemy that actually makes a pilot worth watching.

While Fumero’s Detective Teri handles the boots-on-the-ground frustration of babysitting a genius, Ellis-Taylor’s Captain Frost will likely provide the dry, "I’m too old for this" authority that every good procedural needs. It’s a stellar trio that suggests CBS is leaning hard into the "dramedy" aspect of the show, rather than just another gritty, grey-filtered crime drama.

Waiting for the Big Bang

If you’re reaching for your DVR, hold your horses. CBS has officially slated Einstein for the 2026-2027 broadcast season. Yes, the wait is a bit of a buzzkill, but with a creative team led by Monk creator Andy Breckman, the delay likely means they’re fine-tuning the balance of "smart" and "snarky."

Between the pedigree of the cast and the proven track record of the German source material, Einstein is shaping up to be more than just a placeholder in the Tuesday night lineup. It’s a show that understands that while science is great, watching talented actors roll their eyes at a genius is even better.
