Is It Getting Hot in the OR? Blair Underwood Joins the Cast of Fox’s 'Doc'

Man with short hair, wearing a white jacket and black mesh shirt, smiles slightly against a solid red background.

Just when you thought the halls of Westside Medical couldn’t get any more crowded with oversized egos and questionable bedside manners, Fox has decided to inject a fresh dose of charisma into its medical hit. Blair Underwood, a man who seemingly hasn't aged since the Reagan administration, is officially joining the cast of Doc for its upcoming third season.

If you’ve been following the amnesiac adventures of Dr. Amy Larsen (Molly Parker), you know the show thrives on high-stakes surgery and the kind of personal drama that would make a soap opera writer blush. The addition of Underwood isn't just a casting win; it’s a tactical maneuver to keep the show’s momentum going after Fox greenlit a massive 22-episode order for Season 3.

The Doctor Will See You Now (And He’s Smarter Than You)

Underwood is set to play Dr. Ben Grant, a brilliant trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon. According to the character breakdown, Grant is the kind of guy who walks into a room and assumes he’s the smartest person there and he’s usually right. For a show that already leans heavily into the "genius with a complicated past" trope, Grant sounds like the perfect foil for Larsen.

We’re slated to get our first glimpse of Underwood during the two-hour Season 2 finale on April 14, 2026. It’s a classic Fox move: tease the shiny new toy right before the summer hiatus to ensure we’re all sufficiently parched for Season 3. Underwood is essentially filling the "Prestige Guest Star" vacuum left by Felicity Huffman, who wrapped up her own series-regular arc in Season 2.

Why This Matters for 'Doc' Fans

Medical procedurals live and die by their guest stars and ensemble shifts. By bringing in a heavy hitter like Underwood whose TV resume includes everything from L.A. Law to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. the show is signaling that it’s ready to move into the big leagues of primetime staples.

Grant’s arrival promises a clash of medical titans. While Dr. Larsen is busy piecing her life together eight minutes at a time, Grant represents the old-school, high-ego surgical world that doesn't have much patience for memory gaps. The friction between Grant’s arrogance and Larsen’s vulnerability is exactly the kind of "hate-it-then-love-it" dynamic that keeps the DVRs humming.

Underwood’s smooth-as-silk delivery is the perfect contrast to the show's often frantic energy. Whether he ends up being a mentor, a rival, or a very complicated love interest remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the temperature at Westside Medical just went up a few degrees.

Will Ben Grant be the savior the hospital needs, or just another ego for Amy to manage? We’ll find out when the Season 2 finale drops this April. Stay tuned to The TV Cave for more updates, recaps, and the inevitable "who wore the scrubs better" debate.
