This week on Beyond The Gates, the show was preempted for two days, Anita and Leslie exchanged words, Ashley and Grayson whispered their way through more nothing, and Lia reminded everyone that she can be cold-blooded when the moment calls for it.
And listen, this week was disappointing, so forgive me in advance if this recap has a little extra seasoning on it. Sometimes the soap gives opera. Sometimes it gives waiting room music.
Monday: Hayley The Incompetent Scammer
Hayley brought Bill food to remind him of St. Barts, because apparently romance on this show now comes with questionable leftovers and a side of foolishness. When she told him where the food came from, Bill began choking while Hayley just stood there watching him struggle.
Naomi burst in and rightfully admonished her for doing absolutely nothing. Bill, because he remains allergic to sense, defended Hayley.
And I have to ask: if there was no poison in the food, what exactly was the point of this scene? Was it drama? Was it comedy? Was it supposed to make Hayley look sinister? Inept? Both? I am so over this story that I need the writers to put it in a box, tape it shut, and ship it somewhere offscreen.
Elsewhere, Nicole is still interested in playing the field. Kial, however, wants her to meet his children, whom he has apparently told all about her. All I could think was: is one of them available for Kat? Because Kat and Tomas have been wrung out like an old dishcloth.
Ashley hovered over Grayson while he recovered, and later they both returned to work. I wish I had more to say, but I do not. Ashley and Grayson continue to bore me. The writers continue to push Ashley to the front and she keeps fizzling out. Meanwhile, Kat cannot get a story that isn’t about Eva or Tomas. Please.
Smitty and Jacob also talked about the case, and again, I was bored. The one semi-useful development came when Dani walked in on Tomas and Vanessa talking about Lynette at the Uptown. Tomas cracked under very little pressure and told Dani everything he knew about Lynette. Dani then mentioned that she saw Lynette and Hayley together long before the botched attack. Writers, for the love of all things soapy, end this now.
What could have been a sharp, messy, classically soapy story has been dragged across the floor for too long. The tension is gone. The intrigue is gone. At this point, it feels less like a mystery and more like the show does not know what to do with these characters next.
Put the Kill Bill story out of its misery. Lynette was the best thing about this story, and I am supposed to believe that Randy, who couldn’t even kill Kenneth, offed Lynette? Ok, writers, sure.
Thursday: Anita Gets Flirty, Ted Loses the Plot Again
Thursday gave us one of the week’s few bright spots when Anita visited Madison at the hospital to talk about Vernon’s condition. We learned that Vernon’s symptoms are due to a vitamin deficiency and not dementia.
Thank you, writers, for that small mercy.
The scene between Anita and Madison was sweet, especially when Anita talked about the ways she can care for Vernon and even got a little flirty about it. That warmth is where this show can still shine when it remembers to let the characters breathe.
Unfortunately, Lia later told Madison that she can no longer see patients. Lia's ruthlessness showed when she talked to someone about Grayson and that problem being solved.
Leslie also returned this week and wasted no time being nasty to Shanice. Anita stepped in, and she and Leslie exchanged words. Ted overheard the confrontation and also heard Lia tell Leslie to contact her assistant.
Naturally, because Ted has apparently never met a bad decision he could not slow dance with, he offered Leslie a shoulder.
Shanice later called him on it, and Ted explained that he felt bad for Leslie because he saw a glimpse of the woman she used to be. Ted. You mean the homewrecker you cheated with? That woman? This man is written so foolishly that I am starting to root for him to be single on principle. I love Keith, but Ted as a character needs a complete overhaul. Either fix him, humble him, or replace him with his attractive brother, who actually survived the crash.
Chelsea had words for Leslie when they ran into each other at Orphey’s, which was needed. Later, Chelsea taught Madison how to fight to boost her morale. I appreciated that. It gave their relationship some texture and let Chelsea do something besides react to everyone else’s mess.
Martin and Vernon had another version of the same conversation, and I was bored again. We need movement. We need stakes. We need visuals, a campaign trail, a podium, speeches, etc.
The teens were also back, and this time, Tyrell was caught with Jessica. He seems determined to knock her up so she does not go to UCLA. I kid. Mostly.
But that is what the sudden jump to sex is giving, especially when we have barely seen their relationship develop onscreen. It is another example of the show’s pacing problem. Tyrell’s obsession with Jessica not going away to school is making him look less romantic and more controlling.
There are no likable qualities in this kid right now. He is boring, impulsive, and nearly as bratty as his sister. He is a red flag. Jessica needs to run.
Friday: Anniversaries, Regrets, and Dani’s Bright Spot
Friday brought Nicole and Ted’s anniversary, which led to Kat and Martin arguing about it. Ted and Nicole reminisced, and we learned that Ted kept Carlton away from Nicole during the conference. Carlton fans may feel vindicated by that reveal. I do not.
The true bright spot of the week remained Dani and Andre. Dani and Andre had lunch at Orphey’s with the girls, and once again, they gave the show a needed spark. They have wit, ease, chemistry, and a grown-folks rhythm that does not feel forced. Even when the plot around them is crawling, they bring a little life into the room.
Kudos to Naomi for shutting Bill down when he tried to join after Andre left. Bill, standing there realizing Andre had the family he abandoned for his little airhead, was delicious in the way only soap consequences can be. That is the kind of tension I want more of.
And yes, I still believe Andre is holding a secret. He is too smooth, too steady, and too convenient not to have something tucked in his pocket. But whatever that secret is, it better not be something that sends Dani back down the road to Bill.
No one wants that.
Final Thoughts
I truly do not have much to say about this week, which probably says everything.
Even with some of my favorites onscreen, the week dragged. Dani and Andre still worked because they offer wit, comedy, romance, and a touch of mystery. Anita and Vernon had a sweet moment. Lia got to show a little steel. Chelsea and Madison had a nice beat.
But the larger stories? Same problems, different week. This week was a straight 3 out of 10.
What did you think?
