Beyond the Gates Weekly Recap - May 28–31
Tuesday/Wednesday
Hayley tried to play victim and really thought she could ‘little girl’ Chelsea. She insists that Chelsea accept things where they are because Bill and Dani are never getting back together. Once Chelsea leaves, Hayley backpedals fast, blaming her attitude on hormones and apologizing to Bill, but before that can land completely, Martin strolls in demanding a private word. Bill, feeling himself, says anything Martin has to say can be said in front of his wife. Martin makes it clear, 'not this'. Hayley graciously accommodates, saying that she needs to check her messages. However, Bill insists, and the gloves come off.
Martin and Bill argue in full view. Bill claims Martin has his agenda and he has his own. But Bill isn’t done; knowing Martin's secret, he feels that he holds the cards and reminds Martin that there's still a debt to be paid. That Martin should never forget who cleaned up his mess. Bill didn’t just fix the situation—he fixed HIM. Whew! Who else is ready for this secret to come out? My hand is enthusiastically in the air.
Meanwhile, Naomi and Jacob are in the lobby after a basketball game, when they spot Hayley. Naomi says hello, and Hayley practically short circuits from the urge to spill the beans. She does what Hayley does best, plays victim while dropping shade with an innocent smile. Naomi can;t be bothered. She has no time for Hayley's mess and wants no parts of her. Jacob’s over it. He calls Hayley out and makes it plain that she cannot expect everyone to play nice after what she’s done. Naomi walks away unbothered.
Ty and Jess share a kiss. Well, Jess kisses him. Ty pulls back, clearly overthinking it and assuming it was a pity move. Sir, let yourself have something nice. He completely fumbled due to insecurities. Which is understandable, he is a teenager and hormonal. Along with the bullying, so I get it but Jess has been nothing but nice to him. How could he think she would hang in for so long all for a prank?
Another round of Dashley (Derek + Ashley) angst… again. Yawn. Someone find the fast-forward button.
Chelsea visits Dani, who’s on a business high. She’s buzzing about working with a major influencer and riding the wave of not all bad press is actually bad. Chelsea tries to get a word in about Hayley's pregnancy, but Dani’s already halfway into her “turn lemons into Lemoncello” campaign. When Chelsea finally gets it out, Dani says she’s taking the news standing tall, in her Louboutins.
Dani then reverts. She clowns Bill for being a late-in-life dad, says Hayley’s probably lying, and throws in some classic shade about midlife crisis babies not even being the father’s biologically. To prove to herself that it is a lie, she heads off to check if Hayley’s made an announcement. Because of course, Hayley would make sure the whole world knows she’s pregnant. Dani however, is not convinced. Neither am I. I think that Hayley wants acceptance so badly that she thinks having a child will do it and it wasn't long ago that she had a negative test so why would she take one so soon? Maybe if we had seen her go to the doctor to confirm but again, the show is telling and not showing, ironically.
Thursday
Excuse me while I let out a long-suffering sigh on behalf of Dani. She marches over to Bill's to go another round with Hayley and I think about how old this is getting. Every step forward she takes when it comes to Bill she takes three back.
Dani accuses Hayley right to her face of lying. The insults fly escalating fast, and Bill has to play referee. Dani says that Hayley is faking the pregnancy to cling tighter. And honestly? I tend to agree.
Meanwhile, Leslie is doing her usual chaos tour and drops in on Ted. She thanks him for getting Eva a chair. She tries to play upstanding co parent as if that is all she wants. Ted is visibly over it and tells her to leave. She lingers like she’s got a reason to stay, talking as though he’s invited her presence. He did not.
Kat’s still in detective mode and tells Jacob he needs to move faster. She’s got a still of Leslie sneaking into Laura’s hospital room. Kat wants results yesterday. Side note, Kat and Jacob have fanfiction-inspiring chemistry. I am so tempted to write some.
Later Kat catches her father with Leslie who enjoys the attention and tries to make it appear that an affair is happening. When Leslie leaves, Ted tries to explain to which Kat says she is not stupid. She knows that the woman is a manipulator. The problem is that he should have known better than to even her in, preach Kat. This creates a tear in the fabric of their relationship that was carefully being stitched back together. What did Lauren Hill say? It could all be so simple.
Friday
Anita is full of nerves, preparing to meet the former Articulates. Tracy shows up, but Sharon and her wig are MIA. It turns out that Sharon wants to meet at Orphey’s and specifically wants Anita excluded. Can you say bitterness with a side of petty? Tracy tries to play middle woman and promises to do what she can, but Sharon has a big chip on her shoulder.
Dani meets Pam at The Uptown, and she's in better spirits. They’re meeting a potential male model…. only there's a twist; he's not a model at all. He's one of Pam's friends who owns a jewelry business. Dani's is apologetic and it was humorous, he soon leaves and Pam encourages Dani to get a man and Dani blurts out that she practically has one, Andre.
Kat and Mona are sorting through clothing donations. Kat is clearly low, and she confides in Mona—finally letting some of the pressure off her chest. They come across a jacket. Kat masterfully puts clues together as Nicole joins. Get this woman on the FBI stat. The jacket belonged to Leslie, the one she wore when running Laura off the road. She hid it in the clothing drive, thinking it wouldn't be found. Kat even comes across a receipt.
Meanwhile, Leslie is making sure to cover her tracks when Eva arrives to pick up her things. It is a sad scene as Leslie once again shuts her out and turns her back on her. However, when Leslie leaves Eva returns in a move that I did not expect.
And in a quieter moment, Andre visits Ted. They talk about Dana, Leslie, and all the tangled threads between.
Final Thoughts
Monday was a repeat, and I had to side-eye CBS as none of the other soaps were. This caused the preview to be off as some things shown in the preview did not happen and will not until next week. This week simmered with tension. Martin and Bill’s power struggle is giving old secrets and unfinished business. Hayley continues to be useless. She is a flop, and I really wanted her to be someone with an agenda who knows how to play the game well. Hayley does not give calculated at all.
I love Kat in detective mode but I also like her in boss mode. I don't know where they're going with her, but there's an opportunity there. Could Kat and Naomi become a team like Pope and Associates? I'd like to see it.
